FTP Server

Hi. I got a question and google isn't helping! lol

How do I set up an FTP Server? I have many files that I want to share with my girlfriend/sister's computer when they are not over and I just want them to have access to "My Documents" at any time.

Can anyone help? Appreciate it!

Re: FTP Server

You don't say what OS you are running, but I am going to guess Windows XP. If so, you an install Personal Web Server (essentially IIS lite) or a 3rd party product (see list). Once you have FTP software installed, you need to create IDs, virtual folders pointing at "My Documents" and setup port forwarding in your router/firewall for port 21.

Re: FTP Server

Thank you! The list helped! Now I just pretty much need to figure out port forwarding on my belkin. heh.

Is it easy to change the port? I heard 21 isn't safe.

Re: FTP Server

you can forward an external port to any internal port on any computer, so port 900 externally can map to 21 internally.

Titanium Grey HB 5 spd, ABS, Moonroof, Leather seats, Exel RS-GT 17x7.0 Hyperblack 225/45/17 Azenis RT-615, Racing Beat Front/Rear Sway + Endlinks, Mazdaspeed MSP3 Coilovers, 88 AWR Mount, Apexcone 6000k HID, I deturboed my car and removed my built engine. I'm now stock powertrain + an Injen.

Re: FTP Server

No port is safe. Any port you open is a vulnerability. The idea behind a custom external port is to make it harder for people to find that open port. Either way, be sure you have security setup (ftp account(s) with GOOD passwords). You can even limit access by source IP in most ftp servers and in some routers (not sure about Belkin).
