I never really thought about the parking brake thing. My car's an auto so i rarely use it. Other than when I'm drifting up parking deck ramps and around small children.

I always use the parking brake in both my vehicles. It's second nature now; I apply the parking brake without even realizing it, although it did take some getting used to when I first got the Mazda because I was so used to the shifter on the column and the parking brake on the floor. Like for the first week I had the car, I'd stomp on the deadpedal area or try to shift gears with the column shifter that isn't there.

Number 8 is disgusting! I'm getting a used car on Monday and am going to have to scrub that thing with some major elbow grease like my last used car purchase. Cleaning the inside of your car is like cleaning your bathroom. You use it every day and there is a major accumulation of dirt and grime that accumulate that should be cleaned off regularly. Your steering wheel should not be sticky, your seats should not show a painting of dirt on the drivers side and the carpet should be moderately clean (can't expect it to be perfect all the time but it shouldn't be pile-high full of debris). Why people do not treat the interior of their cars as they do their homes is beyond me.

^ yeah, i cannot STAND it when people let their interiors get filthy. the interior of my 3 gets dusty really fast for some reason (has anyone else noticed this?) so it's hard to keep it perfect, but in general i keep mine really clean and never leave anything in it.

Yes I have noticed this too! The 3 doesn't have good seals around the doors, and hatch. There is always a ton of dirt there when I wash it. Never had a car that was this bad. Not sure why they can't build them to seal up better. Always a ton of cleaning there when she gets a bath.

Re: Top 10 things people do every day to ruin their cars

2 issues although minor with this article.

1. On a manual transmission car you are not only held in place by a "pin". I believe that is only referring to an automatic. In a manual car it is best to leave your car in gear no matter where you park and pull the e-brake when on a decent incline/decline. But using your parking brake to park all the time is not a good thing either, especially in cold weather the brake can seize.

6. When it says you should let the engine idle 30 seconds to a minute at the least, it should say 30 seconds to a minute @ the most. Idling an engine to optimum temperature is a horrible thing to do.

Putting dexcool in your car should be on the list.
