Windows reinstall help /// hard drive priorities?

So i got this laptop that my friend stated it "puked its guts out"

I couldnt do anything on it, i was able to pull alot of his garbage off and decided it was time to reinstall windows (xp)

So anyway a few tries and i finnally got it running great

.... here is the thing

HP had the hard drive set up into 2 partitions, so i kept it that way, made one for 8gb for windows and one for the other 82gb (100gb HD)

Fine.. reformat.. ntfs format... fat32 format... good everything checked out
installed windows onto 8gb partition

then started loading all the device drivers and everything...

then i started loading it up for music and "out of HD space"

shit everything is saving in that first partition, i was dragging things onto the desktop

So i took "Program Files" and move it.. went over to 82gb partition but then it left a copy behind in the 8gb partition
Then tried "Documents and Settings" and error: Cannot copt NTuser because its in use

Where am i at?
Can i delete the "program files" out of 8gb partition and have everything work? no broken paths?
NTuser? i dont know... go into admin and try to transfer for all users? or?

What i am trying to get is so that, when he downloads, loads files, i want them going into the 82gb partition
I know the obvious of dragging into the "My Computer" actual drive but that is not easy for him to do... i need installs and everything going to the big partition

I checked the upfront properties and there is no options for the HD(s)

Thank you
any input my lead me the right way

Nuke it all, wipe out both partitions, delete them completely, and have one large partition encompassing the entire disk, load everything onto that one partition.

A revolution gets its name by always coming back around in your face.

hgahaha

Not to laugh at you, but at one point in time... I remember times like these. like back when I was 11

best bet...

reformat with a single partition.

Alternative...
Reformat with a 80/20 split, use the 20 as a backup space, and 80 for your windows install, software, etc...

But basically... start over. And don't use Fat32. It is 12 year old technology.

NTUSER.dat is your profile information in Windows if you are logged in with that account you can't move that file as it is in Use. TO move it create a second account on your computer, make that account and admin so it has access to your other profile. From there you can copy your user files from your old profile to your backups.

Single NTFS partition. In this day and age there's no reason for most users to run multiple partitions on the same physical drive.
