Cities double charging on the street

So the way i understand it we pay taxes to maintain services like roads, etc. So what is the rationale for the existence of parking meters? We are paying to park on a street we already paid for.

Taxes maintain the roads, parking meters give you a spot to put your car...

Re: Cities double charging on the street

Parking fees help subsidize road construction and maitainance. It certainly isn't double dipping. Your gas tax pays for roads and bridges, but you also have to pay tolls on a number of roads and bridges. I'd personally rather pay for parking and pay just a bit less in taxes or pay a toll and a bit less in taxes. I don't drive on toll roads or bridges much and I would rather not pay out of pocket all of the expense for maitaining them, I would rather the people who use them pay a larger portion of the cost.

You didn't really pay for the street, you paid for part of the street and now your parking fee will pay the balance. Just like a lot of gov't agencies have fees for different things, the MVA for getting a license, or a title or a registration. The MVA is funded by state tax dollars, but it is also funded by fees it charges.
