canadian shipping prices

here's something for all you people from the states to think about regarding canadian shipping prices.

i know buying from canada sucks, and i hate buying from the states too. not because of any particular reason other than money. i hate brokerage fees, customs and all the red tape behind it all. i also hate the increased shipping prices.

recently i sold some bulbs to somebody on the forums and i thought the price i was asking was fair. i had people try to barter shipping down to $5 with me on these bulbs claiming that they, in the states, can ship for only that much. while that may be so, the reality given our economy is higher shipping prices, fuel surcharges and the like. i ship with canada post because they have similar rates to fedex or ups, you're not hit with customs 99% of the time and you will not incur brokerage fees upon arrival. this is the best way to do it as it will be sent usps to you and, if packed right, should arrive undamaged 100%.

to ship 2 bulbs with no insurance the slowest way possible cost me $15 which was 70% of my asking price, killing what little profit i made. to make matters more goofy people kept complaining that they could get them on ebay for x price. well fucking buy them from ebay then.

i have been burned so many times when i bought from the states and the person assured me up and down they'd send via usps and it shows up fedex with $50 customs fee and $100 brokerage.

so really, stop trying to barter down shipping prices with canadians, or at least myself. i'm not trying to whine, just trying to shed some light. while you may only have to pay $20 to ship a header to canada, for me to do the same would cost $50 or more. if the seller sets a price, abide by that price and do not imply i'm trying to fuck you out of money if i say "this is how much it will be". i have better things to do than to try to scam a five sheet out of you.

+1!

If you EVER ship something to Canada do it with USPS. Otherwise the person you're shipping it to will want to cut your balls off when they get a bill for duty and the like.

Nothing pisses me off more than buying an item, having it arrive and owe another $60-70 for the fucking brokerage.

Okay we're a bit off topic but I'd like to respond anyway.

You would think it would be that simple! I always try to give preference to Canadian retailers and ebay sellers for just these reasons. But a LOT of the time, the items I'm looking for I just can't find from a Canadian source, OR, they want a LOT more money for it to the point where it's probably not worth it.

Much obliged!

Not too long ago I wanted to buy a case for my new iPod Touch. The one I wanted I couldn't find anywhere local. It was only like $29 USD on the manufacturer's website, but when I went to actually purchase it, the *cheapest* shipping option to Canada was over $40, I think about $43 or $44. Bear in mind this is for a small box that weighs maybe an ounce. And the cheapest shipping option was around 1.5x the price of the item. C'mon! I think part of the problem was they didn't have an option for Canadian shipping, it was 2 or 3 choices for domestic US shipping, and then two choices for "international", both north of $40.

I emailed them to politely "complain" and see if there was anything they could do and they replied that with their shipping partner that was the cheapest option for them. Very lame. In the meantime, I wound up finding a seller on eBay that sold the case for $20 and only charged me about $5 or $6 to ship, so that was a no-brainer. I dunno, I just don't see why the manufacturer wouldn't seek other options. I mean, I could afford their shipping price but on principle I just could NOT bring myself to pay it. I can't imagine anyone outside of the USA would ever order through them, and they're probably losing sales. Silly.
