Leaving a Tip

Lately, it seems like "tip jars" are popping up all over the place... And I hate it when it says "TIP (To Insure Prompt Service), as if it should be anything less than prompt. Furthermore, I'm currently in Washington D.C., on business and I notice that the people here expect tips for everything.

So to my question... Lets say when you go out to eat and the restaurant automatically includes 18% gratituity on your bill because you have a party of 6 or more. Do you tip on top of that or just leave it with the 18% they added?

What about room service? They'll add 30% gratituity on top of your bill. Is it proper to tip on top of that as well?

I've tried searching and asking around, but I always get mixed opinions. What do you all do?

Re: Leaving a Tip

I very rarely increase an existing tip. The service must be exceptional, above and beyond for me to increase it. I was a waiter for about 12 years and feel this is fair.

I never tip on room service but always on bell service and I also leave a tip for housekeeping.

Rarely will I place money in a tip jar, maybe if it's a small amout of change.

Re: Leaving a Tip

To answer the OP's question, you shouldn't tip on top of gratuity. Only if the waitress is hot.

Re: Leaving a Tip

I dont go to places where they automatically require a tip. At bww I tipped a guy once 10 cents because he was a asshole and didnt play along. We had a fav there before he got fired we usually tipped him VERY VERY WELL. Sometimes 50% of the bill.

I consider 15% to be minimum in terms of restaurants, and i tip more depending on the waiter/waitress/service. I guess i am in the minority because my parents taught me to tip where necessary, we even tip the carhops at sonic.

Re: Leaving a Tip

This Indian taxi driver in NYC was on the phone with his phone in his hand for whole time (where they have strict laws when you're not using hands free while driving) when me and my dad hired him to go to the airport. My dad didn't tip him one cent and plan on walking to the airport lobby. That dude had the nerves to say "what the fuck man? No tip" with his deep Indian accent. I wanted to laugh so hard cause I watched Russell Peters' shows... so my dad replied "Why should I leave you tip? What service did you give me besides taking me here" then he said some nonsense in Indian. That's where I chimed in "Why don't you shut the fuck up, you were on the phone the whole fucking time when we're in your cab and not even hands free! Go back to Indian or some shit and learn how to speak better English cause I can't understand you." He said something again and called my dad a motherfucker (my dad's mother passed away, that was the reason why we were there, although it doesn't necessary meant to his mom) so my dad was pissed, the Indian ran back to his car and my dad just kicked the shit outta his door. hahahahahaha I was like OMGGGGGG LMAO!!!

Anyways, I only leave tips about 15-18%, I don't know why I should but I feel sorry or something if I don't but sometimes I give them none when they don't do their visits.

Re: Leaving a Tip

If it's great service, I'll add to that gratuity. If it was okay or less, then I don't add. I don't mind if they add a tip. Helps me out so I don't have to think.
