For the weather geek

So, I'm a fan of weather and that related to it. Including warnings and stuff. I guess it comes from growing up in places like Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Utah, etc...

Well, I read a few months ago about how the FCC was going to approve a SMS-based system for emergency broadcasts messages. And the service carriers were signed up.

This makes sense to me because we're not always near a radio, tv, or computer. But, a quick message to our phone can warn us easily.

Well, I started to wonder if there was a pilot program as this FEMA/NOAA/DHS system won't be in place until 2010 or so... there is!

Now, to supplament by 2 Midland weather radios is a NOAA weather alert system with text messaging. It's a localized thing, based on your zip code.

Synopsis with Instructions:

The experimental application that WRH is developing for providing mobile warning alerts has been

named the Mobile warning Alert Messaging Application, or MAMA. Three presentation formats

were determined to best serve the range of mobile device capability and customer need. These

formats are named for their level of access to the data and the features they offer. For full

documentation on this application suite, please see http://mobile.wrh.noaa.gov/mama.

MAMA:Text provides automated text message alerts when the NWS issues a watch, warning or

advisory for a customer area of interest. The customer registers interest in a location by texting a

five-digit zip code to the WRH short-code (56149).
For example, texting 20230 to 56149 will

register interest in weather alerts for Washington, D.C. This capability uses SMS (Short Message

Service) for text messaging.

Re: For the weather geek

Sent my info to them...this would be a great idea, especially those who don't have warning sirens nearby (like me). You can barely hear them here and that's only if you are outside...pretty sad for a metropolitan area... /rant :P

Re: For the weather geek

So, this actually does work.

I recieved a text for a "Fire Weather Watch" as it's super dry, hot, and low humidity.
