i need a new camera

hello there. i am looking to buy a new digital camera but don't know what is good. the one i have now doesn't take very good pics and it takes forever to snap the pic. so when i am trying to take a pic of my kitteh, by the time the camera snaps the pic i end up having a pic of the kitteh's ass instead of his face . i also want one that has video. any suggestions?

Re: i need a new camera

I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-W80. I like it. Takes decent pictures, and pretty good video. I only paid $250.

when you snap the pic does it take right away or is there a delay?

can't hardly go wrong with dave's picks...but when you have it narrowed down, start asking for personal opinions....
i like this site cause it's broken down by type and price range.

If it's instant gratification you're after (i.e. no shutter delay), DSLR is really the only way to go. Realistically, you can pick up a used XT or XTi for around the same price as Dave's top picks. Be warned though, Canon SLR ownership is a gateway drug to "L" lenses and full frame sensors...so don't say I didn't warn you

Re: i need a new camera

i too have a sony cybershot point n shoot and LOVE it. there are ways to adjust the speed of the shutter as well. it takes pretty good videos with sound also. i recommended the camera to two co-workers who both now love the camera as well. wal-mart recently had it for $200ish i believe. toss in a $40 2gb card and you'll be set for 500 pictures.

another cool feature is taking a 'burst' of pictures. you hit the button once and it takes anywhere from 5-20 pictures about 1/4 second apart from one another.

Re: i need a new camera

Ahh yes the dreaded shutter delay. Really the only way to avoid it is a dSLR or a very select few rangefinders (I wouldn't call the couple that have basically no delay P&S cameras). All P&S have the issue. One way to semi avoid it is hold the shutter button half down and this will engage the focusing motor, then when you hit it the rest of the way the shutter will fire much faster (still not immediately).

Agreed however, if you are adventurous you can get a Canon Powershot and use the CHDK on it and get some better shutter response and all out of a point and shoot. I would really recommend a DsLR though for really good quality photos with no delay.
