Ideas on saving on electric bill???

Ok so, I live alone in a one bedroom apartment and my electric bill was around $176 this month. Im rarely at home between work and hanging out with people. I have computers but I dont leave them on, just turn them on to do what i want then turn them off. I dont use the oven, stove, or microwave or any other kitchen appliances because i usually eat out or pick up food. So far people have said a couple of things that could be the cause:

1. Air conditioner sucks and needs replaced.
2. I turn my A/C off and on, off when im gone, and back on when I leave (some people said thats bad). when i have it on, its between 75 and 78 usually, and very rarely as i hardly use it for lack of being there.
3. somebody is stealing my electricity.

All in all, any suggestions would be great....thanks

Lots of stuff For Sale with more coming...

Re: Ideas on saving on electric bill???

dont turn it on and off so much.

that would def help save!

leave it on.

i can't wait to see how high my first bill will be. i keep my AC on at 70 (sometimes 66) daily.

i'm prepared to pay at least $150.

CFL's save some money, but they're expensive to buy.
How the hell is youre elec bill 176 in an apt? Mines only $70 or so and i keep my air at 70.
Try hanging thicker curtains they block the sun and will save some cash.

Re: Ideas on saving on electric bill???

Im going to be dealing with this soon enough too since i will be moving into an apartment by mid aug. I hear certain electric devices use more power OFF then ON! I hear TVs and game systems are one of them. how, I dont know. But a follow up to that, "they" say to plug these items in to a power strip and switch the strip off when not in use. Also, you may want to get condesence(sp) light bulbs. They are a little more money to buy, they will pay for themselves.

Re: Ideas on saving on electric bill???

get a portable air conditioner. much more efficient to cool only the room you're in.

fill up your refrigerator and freezer with bottled water if it mostly empty. the less air space, the less the fridge needs to run to maintain temp (once everything is cold).

change all the lights to fluorescent

Try turning most or everything off in your apt and look at the meter...if it's spinning like crazy, somebody is stealing your juice.

run a long extension cord to the laundry room and run all your stuff off that. :P

Wow, my electric is about $18 a month but we have cheap hydro electric power and no a/c.

In your case, you should maintain a somewhat steady thermostat as a lot of energy is used trying to cool down a warm room(s).

If you think something is wrong, ask around and see what your neighbors are paying as well as your coworkers. Could be that your building is poorly insulated.
