Leon (The Professional) experts, lend me your eyes

I watch Leon at least once a month. This has been bugging me for many years, but today it's bugging me more than normal for some reason (I think it was seeing camrycev6's avatar on the other forums for the 1000th time) ...

Does anyone know of a reference that would prove one way or the other if Mathilda was actually the character's original ("real&quot name? Or if she was actually the same student who was previously enrolled at the school? The first time we hear the name Mathilda in the film, is when spoken on the phone by the headmistress, while "Mathilda" pretends to be Mathilda's mother. Her family never uses a name to refer to her character, and when she first tells it to Leon, it sounds as if she is trying it on for size. The headmistress says that she never got to know Mathilda when she was there before, and the other students at the school do not recognize her.

I mean, I think, we are supposed to assume that it isn't her "real" name, but it's kinda subtle, relating scenes were not in the original script, and there isn't anything in the movie that answers it fully one way or another...

Hmmm, never thought about it. I assumed that was her name and she was just covering her butt. I also love that movie!

If you look for the bad in people expecting to find it, you surely will.

Yeah, the answer isn't in the international version either, but more of a good thing is almost always better.

I'm honestly not sure there is an answer, or at least a provable one. I guess I was just hoping Luc Besson was board member.

I also wanted to make sure that it wasn't so blaringly obvious to the rest of the world that Mathilda was not ever intended to be the character's birth name, but it doesn't sound like that's the case.

Well, since Ridley Scott completely missed the point about Deckard NOT being a replicant in his own brilliant movie Blade Runner, perhaps Luc's opinion wouldn't be any better. I like your theory and after all, it is what the viewer thinks that counts.
