I hate my current job and can't find a new one

5 years at a job located in Hell-on-Earth, 50 miles from anywhere (perfect for today's gas prices), where my education is a complete waste and everyone above me makes arbitrary decisions with no regard for accomplishment, dedication, or sacrifice. I'm in total 9-to-5 mode right now - not a good place to be vocationally or mentally.

And in those five years, I haven't found anything new. I've had a total of two interviews, but the salary for each would require a stupendous reduction in my already "meh" standard of living.

I don't want to die here... and I'm definitely dying inside, a little each day.

Post a reply if you're in the same boat (misery loves company), or can offer some real advice, beyond the usual BS of "networking, "read the classifieds, "Monster.com," etc.

Maybe I just missed it, but what line of work are you in and what's your education based on?

Otherwise, I can't see how we can help you.

I'd also be inclined to ask what your degree or education is in.

I'm not a big fan of my job right now. I spend half my day fielding complaints and giving credits because my co-workers can't seem to do their jobs and don't really seem to care all that much about our business. I've talked to a couple of career counselors about a switch and they've all told me my options are wide open with my skill set.

I'll most likely take a pay cut and have less freedom, but I'd rather lose money and freedom than hate my job and wake up feeling like not getting out of bed every day.

Ph.D. and supposedly career in Aerospace Engineering. I've been pigeonholed into a very limited and uninteresting task and can't break out to save my life.

More and more I think I educated myself right out of the job market.

Re: I hate my current job and can't find a new one

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I just recently graduated and took a salary position at the company I've been working for since 2005. I use nothing that I've learned in school and I dread going into work everyday. I thought I was depressed when I was going to school and working, but at least then I had some variety in my day to day life. Now everyday is exactly the same, and when I think that I have to do this for 30 more years, I want to shoot myself.

In the 6 months I was looking for a job, I only had one interview, but they only offered me $40k/year and pretty much said to expect working 9-10 hour days. I said screw that because I knew I could (and now do) make more at my current job. This fall I'm not going to forget to go to the Tech Career Expo on campus like I did last year. I need a job that utilizes the skills I learned in school. I didn't spending 5 years of my youth and tens of thousands of dollars so I get a job that has nothing to do with my area of expertise.

Geeze this is a depressing thread lol.

If you have a Ph.D why not get a job as a college professor?
