How much do you pay for health insurance?

So I just got my Computer Science degree and got a salary position at work (w00t, etc). I haven't been on my parents' health insurance since January of this year, so I figured I should get some health insurance from work in case of the unforeseen. The cheapest insurance my company offers is ~$140/paycheck  for Blue Care Network. So I signed up for it, but quickly canceled it after talking to my friends and parents about it.

With dental coverage (only $13/paycheck, I'm keeping it), I would have ended up paying $300/month for insurance that I would barely ever use. I could lease another car for that much money! I go to the doctor's maybe once or twice a year, and State Farm will cover any medical expenses if I ever crash my car.

How much do you pay for health insurance? What's a good company to go with for individual coverage if I ever need it?

Re: How much do you pay for health insurance?

I don't pay anything as my employer pays the full bill. However, when I was younger (21-22) and single I got a good individual PPO plan through Blue Cross/Blue Shield for around $80/mo. It's likely higher now, but probably still reasonable.

Having said that, at least get coverage to help you in the event of a catastrophe. There's no quicker way to wreck your finances for the rest of your life than being electively uninsured (not to mention it raises healthcare costs for those of us that actually choose to be insured).

our health insurance is free, but we pay for our dental... I think its only like $13 a paycheck for me as well.

**not on this forum and not unless its in a for sale thread.

Costco had a program for awhile. 61 bucks a month. Has a pretty high deductable, but I dont go to the drs when I get sick or anything. Its basically for broken bones, and bigger issues.

Yea, I've never had a broken bone, no surgeries, not even a remotely serious health issue, and I eat quasi-healthy.

If you want to pay a minimal amount, find a policy that strictly covers hospital stays, emergencies, etc.

Don't go w/o insurance any longer. You're one accident away from a lifetime of medical related debt.

Well I'm covered for car accidents, and I really don't see any other type of accident happening. I don't do anything crazy or dangerous; I work, play Wii, um... yea I don't have a very exciting life.

I'm not trying to be abrasive, but this is part of the reason that everyone else has to pay so much for regular coverage. I pay more month to month (while it's not straight out of my pocket, I would be assured a higher salary in return for no coverage) because the system has to make up for the money they're losing when people like you require extensive treatment.

How much would you be willing to pay for internet/cable/cell phone, etc.? Probably pretty close to $300, yet you won't fork out that sort of dough for something that's much more important to your wellbeing and long term health.

Again, not ragging on you in particular. You're just part of a massive segment of the population that forgoes your responsibilities and puts the risk on everyone else...

True story there. A month after getting mine I ate shit snowboarding, broke my collar bone. Not even a major deal right? Got a bill for it, it would have been 6 grand out of my pocket just for that. No hopsital stay or anything like that.

Vicodin = 8 bucks a pill, and I was prescribed 100. :shock:

Now imagine a car accident, where you are in a hospital for a few weeks, on IV's getting all kinds of pain meds, stayed a night or two in ICU

You can only imagine what type of bill that would be.
