Manual Tranny.... Help me learn?

I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can learn how to drive stick. Ive done it once or twice and I need some more practice..My mom used to have an 85 skyhawk but sold it and now both have automatic. I was looking into renting a car for the weekend and learning but I really dont think that would work cause they dont offer stick anymore. and do you have any other suggestions than asking a friend ? (Most of them drive auto anyways.....)

Re: Manual Tranny....

Well getting a friend who knows to coem with you is great. Go to a school parkinglot or some parking lot thats empty. From there you want to just get into gradually learning it. Im sure other members could get into specifics far better than me.

Re: Manual Tranny.... Help me learn?

it'll be pretty hard to find a car rental place that rents out manuals, well at least I haven't seen any. I just took delivery of my 3 mtx with only having practice 3 or 4 times on a friend's car. Granted I did stall on the way home. I've probably stall at least 30-40 times since then although only rarely these days, only when I rush it or didn't pay attention.

Hmm I see, well my biggest problem is just finding a car. I have plenty of people to teach me I just need the car

I learned by test driving used cars (ones that were well used).

Re: Manual Tranny.... Help me learn?

Want to learn how to drive a stick?

Got to a parking lot. Then, without hitting the throttle at all, let the clutch out slowly and smoothly until you start moving. Most cars nowadays don't even require any throttle modulation for forward movement. Get familiar with that friction point, then learn how to apply power during that movement for normal acceleration.

Once you understand the mechanics behind a manual tranny, it's much easier to drive (part of the reason guys pick it up so much faster than women.....sorry ladies....).

Re: Manual Tranny.... Help me learn?

Go online and learn the concept behind a manual transmission. I felt that helped me more and helped me realize what was going on when I pressed the clutch or any other movement involved, it just teaches you whats going on behind what you can see. I felt it helped me to be more prepared when I got behind the wheel, and I didn't even use a parking lot for more than 20 minutes, just went out and drove after that. To me it was more difficult with my dad trying to teach me, but that just may have been because of me and the way I learn.

Re: Manual Tranny.... Help me learn?

Thanks for all the replies on how to learn lol (I have seen similar posts and read up) but I need more suggestions on HOW to acquire a car to learn how to drive stick....Even if its just for the weekend. My only other alternative is calling every rental place in town....

I would expect you could find either a stripped econocar in manual, or a sports car for rent.
Call around, see what you can find.
For that matter, you might be able to pick up a $500 junker that runs and will be enough for you to learn on then resell or donate & take as a tax credit.

Re: Manual Tranny.... Help me learn?

Actually, this might sound crazy, but look in the phonebook for a drivers ed course, call them up and look for one that can instruct you on driving MTX. You might even be able to use the class for an insurance discount.

A revolution gets its name by always coming back around in your face.
