alloy tires and powercoating issues.

i have been reading on some other forums about powercoating my allow wheels. One forum member mentioned, alloy starts to break down(crystals) past 400degrees F. Now the place that does them around my town heats them up to 400F too after i called them today.

Do I need to worry about anything when it comes to powercoating the allow wheels? the wheels are not going to snap when i make a sharp turn around the mountain side at 60mph?

Re: alloy tires and powercoating issues.

uhh thats all personal preference and what your financial budget is. im gettin a speed3 and i personally love the stock rims so im just gonna powder coat them. i know a lot of people say ohh stock rims are sooo heavy, but cmon we're not race car drivers i think our cars can handle the extra 20lbs if not then take out the clothes in the back, ur subs, ur ipod, w/e.

Re: alloy tires and powercoating issues.

The alloy most certainly doesn't start breaking down at 400F. Alloy wheels are an aluminum alloy that doesn't begin to really weaken until you get up well over 1,000F let alone "break down".

If you heated them to well over 1,000F and squelched them you might cause some issues, but I doubt it. You'd probably have to get them up closer to 1,400F to cause issues (around the melt point of a lot of alloys of aluminum).

[/quote]I would say buying wheels, unless you really like the design of the wheel you are getting powder coated.
