GIMP?

Hey all, I just downloaded that free version of Photoshop called GIMP. How in the heck do you use it?? It's soooo weird! lol
I don't want to spend $600 bucks on computer software, nor do I have near the funds to do so. If anyone has this program, what are the basics? I tried playing around with it earlier, but just gave up. I don't understand what half the tools do! Even though it explains what they do as you scroll over them....oh well.

Re: GIMP?

To be fair, it's not a free version of Photoshop, but it can do almost everything Photoshop can do.
You just have to unlearn Photoshop habits if that's what you're used to.

The tutorials are really good. They're all over the web and there is probably a how-to or tutorial for whatever you want to do to your image/photos. The GUI is a bit clunky and has a higher learning curve than Photoshop's GUI.
However, there is a project that tries to implement a Photoshop-like GUI to GIMP called *drum roll* GIMPshop.
http://www.gimpshop.com/ - however, there seems to be some bugs in it so I'd recommend sticking to regular GIMP.

I used to use Photoshop, but now using GIMP on my Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. The only thing I miss is the most polished look of the interface.

Man, I tried to read the tutorials, but....ugh. It was so difficult to understand. I haven't tried to use it since the night I downloaded it last week.

Re: GIMP?

I need to download GIMP as well. I have used Photoshop all the time at work... but I don't have the cash to shell out for the program.

Re: GIMP?

It's a little frustrating at first, I gave up trying to figure it out when I first downloaded it. I've never worked with any type of photo editing software before, but I just cooled off and decided to take figuring gimp out little by little, I think I got better at it, again patience is key haha I didn't even think of looking for tutorials for gimp, I'll be checking them out later this week

[/quote]This would be good place to start to get familiar with the tools and how GIMP does things.

You can move on from there at http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/.

Focus on learning how to do certain things instead of learning the whole software at once. It takes patience as stated above.

Re: GIMP?

I think sbmonkey said it best, learn to do certain things than trying to learn the whole program
