CarMax

Hey has anyone done any business with that car company, CarMax? I just found out about them, cuz they're opening a store in Tucson (it would be the closest location to me). I was just wondering if anyone traded in their car, whatever it was, for a fair price (KBB value, at least). If my car doesn't sell really soon, I'm wondering if maybe I should sell my car to them, and hope to get what it's actually worth.

So if anyone has gone through this place for a used car, trade-in, or sale, please let me know if it was fair, and how they ran their business. Thanks

Re: CarMax

It doesn't hurt to try, but I haven't heard people getting anywhere close to KBB values with CarMax. They'll probably low-ball you like any other dealership.

Re: CarMax

Yeah, I wasn't sure what kind of place it was. I didn't wanna trade in my car for my 3, cuz I knew I would get zero dollars for it, so I decided that selling it would be the best route. It's been 2 weeks since I got the 3, and 4 days since I put my other car up for sale on Auto Trader. Anyway, I might try to contact them when the store opens next weekend. I had a feeling, though, that they might try to pull BS with me lol.

Re: CarMax

they usually don't give you that much because they still need to make a profit on the sale.

Re: CarMax

The key with Carmax is to only go there for an appraisal if it's a car that they'll be able to sell on their lots (i.e. never been in an accident, lower to average miles, late model year, etc.). If you take a 6 year old car with 120k miles on it to them, you're gonna get lowballed.

Hm...

Well I'm trying to sell a '98 Maxima with 189k miles. I guess I won't even consider. Thanks though everyone!

My dad took my car around town today with 2 For Sale signs on it. I'm gonna miss that little beast

Re: CarMax

Yeah they like to bend you over and take it.

They offered 4,500 on a 5 year old lincoln towncar that was loaded in great shape with only 40k miles on the odo, dealership gave me 7,500 as a trade in and private sale was actually around 10-11k looking in the papers. I just couldn't talk the dealership into more. It probably didn't help that I was trading a lincoln in on a Mazda and the owners of the dealership don't own any domestic vehicle dealerships.

Anyway, for me it was so much less hassle just to take the trade in value.

I have had friends who have gone there with fairly new vehicles and they generally seem to offer about half of what private sale would get you (which is generally less the trade in as it is). Car max does well because they can sucker you into selling your car and then they will turn around and either sell it at auction for a good 20-30% premium or they will sell it through their store fronts for a 200-300% premium. Their trade in values are also almost universly lower then what a dealership would offer you (and by a lot).

They suck. Might not be a terrible place to buy a car from however, just don't bother if you have a trade in.

Re: CarMax

I've sold several cars to Carmax. One was a 2001 Silverado that I paid $12,500 for it new (loss leader 6 cyl/5 sp. model). Carmax gave me $11,800 for it after I had owned it for a year and a half and put 20k miles on it.

Another time I sold them an 04 Saturn VUE. Paid $10,500 for it used in 2005. Sold it to Carmax in early 2007 for $9,800.

Not exactly bending me over, but your experiences may vary. I keep my cars in pristine condition and only drive 10-12k miles a year, so I never have a problem with them.
