Mazda 3 Hatch Patent Drawing

I work at the US Patent and Trademark office. Today while doing a search I stumbled upon a drawing for a cargo rack that used a mazda 3 hatch in the drawings. Check it out Google Patents

Re: Mazda 3 Hatch Patent Drawing

Is it common for a car to have a patent like this? I know they have patents for technological advances, but structural designs? This is a first for me...

I've only been working here for about a year but I'd have to say the most fun and interesting Patents are from inventors who try to get a Patent without hiring a Patent Attorney.

The patent was not for the car but rather the device to attach to the car. This was the first Patent that I could actually tell what the car was.
