How to choose the correct wedding ring.

I have seen a few threads on here on wedding rings, engagement ring prices, or the conversation was in the ladies lounge, but didn't exactly find an answer.

So few questions.

1) My gf does not know her ring size, does not have any rings that fit and her mom nor her friends know what her ring size is. What do you think is the best way to find out her size short of actually measuring it in her sleep?

2) Some guys are able to tell what their women wants in a ring from previous conversations about rings or perhaps they just buy whatever and the girl will like it because, well, because it is a wedding ring. How would you say is the best way to go about finding out exactly what she wants? (I realize I know her likes and dislikes to a certain point and could probably find one that she will like. But asking her directly what kind of wedding rings she REALLY likes pretty much destroys any surprise.)

3) What is up with the 2 band wedding rings for women? I feel like I missed this somewhere in life growing up. So the one with the main diamond in it you propose with. She wears that one until the wedding day and then you add on a matching band?

So far this is where I am at for now: $1600.00

Channel-Set Princess-Cut Diamond Engagement Ring Setting and Matching Band in 18k White Gold has a 0.30 carat Princess-Cut center diamond with Very Good-cut, E-color, and VVS1-clarity. With this choice of setting and band, the total carat weight of diamonds for both of your rings is 0.80.

That one looks good to me.

Re: How to choose the correct wedding ring.

I know you might be strapped for cash, but a .3 carat center diamond will look absolutely positively tiny. Go to a store and look at one compared to a ring.

My wife has a channel set (a little more squared off than that one) and loves it. However, having a channel set, which looks great, necessitates a thicker band. Put a small rock on a thicker band and it looks smaller

I'm not trying to discourage you, just trying to let you know. Walk into a good jewelry store (not a mall chain) and see if they can show you a .3 carat, ask if they have anything similarly sized in a ring.

Re: How to choose the correct wedding ring.

it depends on what she likes ask her parents to help you. have her mom take her to a store to look for herself bc her dad wants to "upgrade" the moms current ring. have her mom help her pick out the ring. tell her mom to buy her a pretty one for the right hand but asl the jewler to measure both hands bc so in case her fingers get swolen she can switch what hand the rings on. did you ever get her a promise ring?

Not discouraging at all. I know what you mean about the size. My budget is up to $2000 so I have no problem going a bit bigger. The site I was at had that size in the quality I wanted.

Re: How to choose the correct wedding ring.

1. I dont know my ring size either but I have an advantage, my boyfriend works at his dads jewelry store and I tried a ring on and was like what size is this it fits perfectly, turns out im a 6. But a girl will usually hint at the size or find out for herself. worse comes to worse make sure the ring you pick can be sized up or down later.

2. Buy your girl a magazine like cosmo, they have engagement ring adverts all the time. Ask her friends if she talks about it, girls talk about this to other girls wondering what it could look like. Or you can be an ass like my boyfriend and I went to the store and he was like do you want to see the ring I have picked out of you? I was like no I want to wait and see it when you propose. I love him though, now I cant stop thinking about it. Make sure you know your diamonds or get with a friend who knows it. Many places will rip you off! They prey on people who dont know much and will sell you a bad diamond for way to much money. Remember the 3 Cs, Cut, Color and Clarity. Many sites have good info. Pick a ring that screams thats her ring!

3. The 2 band is exactly that, the engagement ring and the wedding band. Many couples go for matching rings with their spouse or the woman gets a matching wedding ring that matches her engagement. That is your choice, I like to match with my boyfriend but he said the one he likes wont match my ring, so we shall see.

Good luck! If you have questions I cant answer ill ask my boyfriend for you when I see him and post here. He knows more then I do which is good for me

No promise ring for her. I am 8 years out of high school and did not know her back then.

Interesting idea about having her mom take her shopping. Her mom loves me and might do it. Hmmm. Good idea.

Re: How to choose the correct wedding ring.

Yeah, .3 carats is pretty small. Look for deals as well. Check out facebook or Craigslist. My buddy sold me a cheap band but it had a $2300 appraised .75 carat diamond on it for $1000. He wanted to get rid of it and sold it to me since we are really good friends. There's nothing wrong with looking for a good deal on a ring. I also got a custom band made that will make the TW in diamonds almost 1.25 carats. At the end of the day I only spent $2300 and the ring will almost be worth $4k.

LMFAO "oh i thought i didn't need that" i bet in your head you were like "go kick your mom in the ass for me when you get home " 08mazda2.0

Thank you for answering within the numbers I gave. Very easy to read

1) I figure the safe bet is to go a little big and have it resized. Because if it is too small and does not fit on her finger at all when she says yes, that would be really bad.

2) Cosmo is the last magazine my gf would read. She doesn't even swear, haha. I may use the idea above with her mom, or have one of her friends start asking her questions about it and report back to me.

Thanks for the feedback
