EVO GSR vs. WRX STI...Who Wins?...335xi...

Automobile Magazine 4/08 article by jason cammisa

Evo tested at $35k
STI tested at $40k
335 tested at $47k

"The lancer evo's raucous in-line four could wake the dead. Inside the car, it sounds like a blender. Outside, a jet helicopter. The engine is so vocal you don't need a tach."

"The 335xi's operatic engine and great steering feedback keep its driver as involved as the Evo's but as confident as the STI's."

"The second you climb into the BMW, you really realize that you've just graduated from t-ball straight to the major leagues. Everything your fingers touch feel twice as expensive. With the proverbial twist of the key (the bmw uses a start button), discussion about the slight acceleration difference between the STI and the Evo are immediately silenced. The BMW beat both the Japanese cars in a straight line.

From a standing start, the 335 was merely a bit quicker than the other two cars, but in real world driving it's significantly faster. The Evo's engine slowly comes alive from 3k rpm; the STI's wakes up suddenly at 4k rpm. The 335 however, is always alert, achieving peak boost at 1400 rpm - pulling all the way to 7k rpm. Around town, it feels twice as powerful as either four cylinders, and on the highways, it simply walks away from both.

Some enthusiasts, though, will always view the pair as sub - $20k economy cars with $20k in upgrades, no matter their performance chops. A few years back, both the STI and the Evo were fantastic bargains at about $30k. However, as these japanese rally cars creep up in price, more and more boy racers will understandably stretch their budgets and look toward Germany."

12k and 7k price difference between the Evo and STi, respectively. Why would anyone review these cars together? I realize they may have "similar" specifications, but come on, there is some major (and minor) differences between these vehicles.

Comparing the STi and EVO, ok.. add a 335xi in there is just ridiculous.

STI is only 7k less than the 335...i think it's more like...look what you can get for only 7-10k more...and you get the maintenance free as well...4 years 50kmi...

MS3 was 24k, STi is 30k... 6k difference. I know the differences I'm getting but 30k was out of my budget at the time of said car purchase.

In Kanuckistan the 335xi isn't much more than the Evo or STi at all, then you gotta factor in we get it @ 2.9% finance and the 4 years of free maintenance. But still I would rather have a 335i or a 135i, I don't really want AWD.
