I need a new job...

i want to look for a new job but the problem is I have a all expense paid vacation to Hawaii from April 22-30... I think I should wait until after that to begin looking for new work, I doubt anyone would take me serious looking for a new job when i need to take off 2 weeks a month later...

it wouldn't hurt. just let them know when your start date would be (after the vacation I presume). This would give you plenty of time to find a good fit for you and also plenty of time to let your current employer know you are leaving.

Check with your friends and family and friends of them and try and network yourself into a new job. It is always better to know someone on the "inside."

Re: I need a new job...

I may be in the same boat, I have a vacation in May for a little more then a week, and I figure if I quite now, and get a job next week or so, that cuts it close for the new employer, so I'm goin' to wait until I get back from NYC. But +1 on offering any future employer a heads up on your vacation plans.

^ Agree w/ cromus

I'd start looking now. Sometimes it can take a month to find the right place, and a month for them to finish the interview process (depending on the place). If you wait until late April you might not start your new job until late June.

Screw that.. begin now!!  Just let them know that you have this prior commitment* coming up so if they are to hire you they have to keep in mind that from April 22-30 you will be out of town.

Re: I need a new job...

I agree with Chromus as well. It can take a long time to get through the hiring process. Most employers are pretty understanding about the start date having to be somewhat flexible.

Some employers are also relatively understanding of taking leave early after starting a job. For example most employers would rather hire you and let you take 2 weeks of leave a month and a half into a job rather then have you start 8 weeks later or even take that leave a couple of weeks into a job.

I wouldn't let your vacation change your job hunting plans. I would however make sure you have a way to be in touch during your vacation if you are looking. Take your cell phone and give out that as your contact number and if applying to jobs via email make sure you can check it a few times during your vacation. Being out of touch for 2 weeks is a good way to get passed over on an interview. Most employers are willing to be a bit flexible on scheduling an interview as well (within reason).
