RAM upgrade question

my sister has a dell optiplex gx240 desktop. it has a 1.7GHz P4, and 256mb pc-133 type RAM. It used to have Windows 2000, but i recently installed a copy of xp on it. Since then it runs slow and i figure that is due to the ram. What should i upgrade to? should i run 2x256mb or 2x512mb? is 1gb overkill? without looking i would assume that right now there is one slot with 256mb and one empty slot.

Re: RAM upgrade question

if there is one stick of 256 and one empty slot, can i just buy a 512 stick and add it to the existing 256?

Re: RAM upgrade question

What does she use the computer for?

512MB is good, 1GB is better.

xp should run pretty well with that setup 768MB ram with a 1.7ghz running xp...as long as shes not a gamer this thing is gonna smoke everyday apps.
