a couple questions about a laptop

So I'm buying a new laptop to replace my old desktop. I've been looking at this one http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=8187792 but I'm not sure about 3 things.

1. (Multimedia Drive(s): Super Multi 8X DVD R/RW with Double Layer Support) Does this mean it will play and burn CD's also? I need a CD burner, I could care less about burning DVD's

2. (Wireless Option: 802 11b/g WLAN) I have wireless internet running in my home. I've brought my moms laptop over here turned it on, scanned for my wireless, and clicked on it. I was online instantly, no hassles. Will this computer be capable of doing that?

3. Windows vista.... i've heard bad things, any comments? Do people hate it or like it?

Thanks for your help

Re: a couple questions about a laptop

Yes 8X DVD/RW just states that it burns DVD's as well. Wireless generally just depends on how the main network is setup. My g/f wireless is setup to private so we had to make it public for me to connect to it and then set it back to private so no one else could connect to her connection. I also had to save the passphrase in a notebook file because I used to get booted for some reason, but I haven't had that problem in some time. I have a hp dv9000 series and it's a good laptop in my opinion. You're getting a good deal at $860 as well. I paid almost $1100 for mine on ebay and it came with a 1.7 or 1.8 dual core pentium, 1 gig of ram, and a 100 gig hard drive. I have vista on my laptop and I like it, but I don't tweak my laptop like I tweak my desktop. I cleaned up the startup process because it was killing my ram speed. These laptops come preloaded with so much bullcrap that it's ridiculous. The 17" monitor leaves nothing to desire either and the display looks really nice. I think you will like Vista a lot, but it's more user friendly than XP Pro. I didn't like it at first, but now I love it.

Re: a couple questions about a laptop

Thanks for your help, sometimes when i look at computer specs I see a lot of numbers and letters that mean nothing I figure out how to use the damn thing after I get it, I just have to make sure it has all the stuff I need before buying it.
My wireless is set up unprotected (no passwords) I'm just a friendly guy who lets my neighbors have free internet... actually it was pissing me off with a pass. It was messing with my psp, not allowing it to connect.

Re: a couple questions about a laptop

That should be alright for basic computer use. Once you get it, or a laptop with vista, just look into disabling UAC. It should be decent for you, I got such a good deal on mine a year and 1/2 ago, and one still cannot find it the same for the same or less price. Keep in mind this laptop won't be capable of any form of high end gaming at all. It's integrated video, so you can play some simple games or older ones (such as starcraft). It's also an 8 cell battery, so that'll be alright on power.

Also about your password giving trouble to your psp, it was probably the encryption type. Keep in mind no password can actually be a bad thing too. Criminal use via your internet can get you into trouble. Hopefully that won't happen.

Re: a couple questions about a laptop

Oh, I forgot to mention that my laptop does allow me to play games like CS:S. It has 256 mb of dedicated graphics. I thought I would use it when I sold my laptop, but I never got around to playing games on it. I use my ps3 to play all the games I want to play now.
