Did me and my g/f screw up?? (kinda long)

Story goes my G/F wrecked her 92 Eagle Talon back in Jan 07, it was icy and slid out into an intersection and was hit and got all tore up along the side of the car. Insurance wouldn't as she only had liability. It still drove fine though so she kept driving it.. Fast forward to Aug 07, she bought a brand new Jetta and parked the Talon in the back yard at her parents house. Sep 07 she met me and we started dating and I found out about the Talon, I was like sell that thing get rid of it and for some reason she kept saying no.. Now its Jan 08 and I finally convince her to sell the car I post an add on Craigslist saying its a running project car and that its $300. We didnt even know if it would start because it hadn't been touched in about 5 months. So it wouldnt start on its own, the we get jumper cables and got it started and we moved it to the street, once it hit the street it died. A 16 (keep in mind that age) year old kid came to look at it last night, we got it stared with jumper cables again and he wanted to take it for a test drive. The thing actually drove he took it on a good 3-5 mile drive. The car had tons of stuff wrong with it plus the accident on top if it spewing out TONS and tons of white smoke, I mean so much you could almost not see the car though the smoke at idle!!!!!! So the kid sat there for a few minutes and pulls out a wad of mixed and match cash everything from 1's to 100's and says here is $300 I will take it. So we fill out the title, everything on it and he says I cant sign it because i am a minor, so he fill out all his moms info but the signature bar and he was going to take that home and get it signed then send it in. I thought it was a bad idea and thought he should just bring her by the next day but my g/f said no she didnt care. So about an hour later there is a knock on the door and its the kid, he said the engine blew (oil all over the road oil then block was bright red, so he says) 10 miles down the road and he wants his money back. I decided not to be involded in this conversation so I just listen.. My g/f says no you cant have your money back you ageeed to buy it, its not my fault the engine blew on you, you test drove it and said you wanted it, you checked it all out before you said you wanted it (and he seemed to know alot about them) she both of them got into a semi heated argument about getting his money back and all of a sudden he called here a bitch. So i become involed, I go and ask him the problem. He tells me the car she just sold him blew up on the free way and he wants his money back.. I say ok where is the car, he says 10 miles down the freeway, I ask hows its getting back here if you want your money back, he says tow it. I say whos paying for that and he said not me. I say ok, who is paying to fix the engine since it was driving good when you left with it, he said not me. And I said so it sounds like you just bought yourself the car. Then he said have fun talking to the police tomorrow faggot and he walked away.

My question is should we of gave him his money back (legally)?? because the title was never signed over to his mom.. Again its really not out fault it blew up 10 miles down the road, we didnt know it would do that, I mean the car has been sitting for 5 months and what did you expect to get for $300??!!! Plus he blew the engine!! He was so excited it was a turbo AWD he could of been trying to race it or some stupid shit... Anyways its not my problem its my g/f's I am just looking for any opinions..

Title still in your name.. you needed jumpers to get the car started, were lucky it made it to the curb... I'd say give him the money back. Kid's 16 therefore can't commit to the contract of buying the car anyway. Clearly it wasn't running "good" when he left with it too.

For $300, I'd give him the money back. Not worth having conniving teenagers around eager to egg your house/car, etc.

Bet you could have gotten more than $300 by calling a salvage yard to come get it.

Yeah, give him the money back and have a junkyard tow it away for you.

I have a salvage yard take my Civic away and they didn't give me shit for it.. They said "If we come tow it, we won't pay you for it." So that might not be the best option if you're looking for a few bucks from it.

Re: Did me and my g/f screw up?? (kinda long)

i'd give him back the money (minus the tow fee if any...)...if you had a good bill of sale and the title was already signed, I'd give him back 1/2...since he prolly broke it instead of babying it until it was fixed properly...it's just plain stupid to drive a car in that condition on the freeway...

..can't you part it out for $300?

Re: Did me and my g/f screw up?? (kinda long)

I would think any junkyard would have turned it into nuts and bolts for $300. I personally wouldn't give the kid his money back, because he put himself into an adult situation of buying a car. That's like him going to Abercrombie and Fitch and buying $300 worth the clothes wearing them and not liking any of them and then trying to take them back to A&F. They are gonna look at him like he's F'n stupid. Basically you (the seller) will lose in the long run, because it was like he rented your car for a short period and then gave it back broken. Why do you think we you rent a car it's required that you have insurance. If anything happens to the car they want to be able to get compensation for it. Who's to say he wouldn't have done the same thing if the car broke down a week later. I say the kid is 100% at fault and if anything he can get most of his return back on the car turning it into nuts and bolts.

LMFAO "oh i thought i didn't need that" i bet in your head you were like "go kick your mom in the ass for me when you get home " 08mazda2.0

My friend totalled his 626 (engine was still in good shape, though). Salvage company came and towed it out of the ditch next to the freeway and gave him $500 for it. Each situation is different, but they should go pick up the car before it gets towed and they have to pay impound/storage fees...
