Quick PC Question

I think my gf was looking at porn or something because we're getting a bunch of pop-ups all the time now. My pop-up blocker is on so I am thinking it's got to be some spamware crap. What's the best free program I can download off the net to get rid of this trash? A link would be helful too!

Thanks guys & gals.

There is no such thing. All freeware to get rid of pop up ads will serve you pop up ads, they tell you that in the TOS that nobody ever reads.

Spybot Search & Destroy
Ad Aware

ect
ect
ect
All of them do the same thing.
You have to BUY the product for them to not serve you ads.

And it may not have been pron that she was looking at. A lot of times toolbars for I.E., Poker websites, and just plain old junk websites set up for that very purpose will auto-load software onto your system.

If you go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove programs, and look through the list for any toolbars, Cash Back programs, Online Poker programs, or anything suspicious ... google it and see what it REALLY is. Then remove it.

Oh yeah, when you are done, restart your computer and repeat ... if any of those programs that you removed are still there, then you have a serious problem that a compy tech will probably have to fix.

Re: Quick PC Question

for free, I would try Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

for a small cost...
Zerospyware from FBM is really good. http://www.fbmsoftware.com/
www.pctools.com also has a decent product...

I do not recommend Ad Aware...

Re: Quick PC Question

it's caused other problems of it's own at my company when users have installed it...
I'm not a PC tech so I don't know the specifics (perhaps resource issues) but our desktop team is constantly removing it to resolve issues....

***I might be wrong now as the product may have been improved...

Re: Quick PC Question

^ doesn't detect all of it or has false alerts sometimes.....

try http://housecall65.trendmicro.com (free web scan which is pretty good but sometimes a bit flaky to use)

and also the windows live onecare online scan too might work.
