How much SHOULD this body work cost? Very different estimates [Pics]

This happened around New Year's, I slid off the road for the first time ever and I had my cousin come pull me out of the snow. We were stupid and for some reason didn't have anyone in the driver's seat to put the breaks on when the car was pulled out, so my car just rolled into his truck.

Anyways, the morning after I took it to a local personally-owned body shop and got an estimate of $900. Since I was only visiting though I couldn't get it fixed there since I had to head back home. Since then, I've gotten estimates of $800, $2100, and over $2000. It seems like the estimates are either under $1000, or over $2000. The ones under $1000 were by body shops that were personally owned/operated, while the $2100 one was at the Mazda dealership, and the other one was at more of a body shop company.

Looking at the damage, how much do you think the repairs should really cost? The reason why I haven't talked to my insurance company yet is because I have a $1000 deductible, so if the cost is around there, then it'd be stupid to file a claim. But, if the repairs ended up being a lot more, I would probably go ahead and file a claim even though my rates may go up (despite having a perfect driving record prior to this).

Thanks for any info, and also if you have any advice as far as the body shops go let me know... I've only been in one accident which wasn't my fault so I've never shopped around for body work before. One thing I'm wondering about is if I should be wary of the < $1000 estimates.

I'd go with the cost over $2000.

Thanks for the advice.

Another thing, if I go with the insurance company I should be able to get a rental car for free.

Anyone else have an opinion though?

Depends, do you have rental coverage on your policy?

As for the damage, dunno, looks like it is pretty much just the quarter panel that needs replacing and a new tail light. I don't know parts costs, but I am guessing at least $600 for parts, plus labor plus painting the new quarter panel. I would say less then $1000 could be, if the shop really can do the work cheap, but I would be warry of the work quality, over $2000 sounds like they are soaking you though, unless they are including respraying a good area of the vehicle to blend things in.

I would guess more like 1200-1800.

PS I checked, quarter panel assembly without side sill is about $570 from Mazda and about $520 if you look hard for it, my guess is tail light is at least $80 from Mazda, maybe as much as $150. So you are looking at spending at least $600 parts, up to about $750.

The estimates I've had done only replaced the taillight assembly, the quarter panel was going to be repaired.

Thanks for the help guys.

I took it to another place for an estimate and he took the light out so he could take a look at the damage better, and he said that he would like to replace the bumper also because one of the points at where it is connected/hung on is damaged as you can see in the pic.

He does a lot of work for dealerships and seemed like he would do a good job. He said that he'd do it for $1800 (the estimate was $2000).

My deductible is $1000, I'm not sure if I should go through the insurance company or not.

$1800 or insurance claim..damn. Do you know how much your insurance will rise? It may almost be worth keeping it off the books. For the simple reason of not having a salvage title which will molest your resale value + the insurance increase.. Just pay cash and keep it off the books.

Just make sure the trunk aligns too.... I had to replace my trunk and bumper and each of those ran me almost 600 for each piece itself, plus paint and time etc etc. My damage was worse, but not by a lot. The total repair bill came to something either3,400 or 4,300, I cant remember

Salvage title? Wouldn't that be the case if the damage was extensive and considered a total loss? Or do you mean something else? (i.e. having the accident listed on the car's history report if I go through the insurance company)

Also, I just inquired about the accident forgiveness offered by Liberty Mutual and found out that my driver history report is incorrect - 3.5 years ago in my only other accident they listed me as being at fault, even though I most definitely was not - so at the very least I'm going to now try to get that corrected.

As it stands now, if I can get the accident forgiveness with the aforementioned issue fixed then that would influence my decision.
