Every lose your car keys on a trip?

i drove 5 hours to meet up with college buddies for snowboarding when i, in a hurry, forgot to zip my pocket with my keys in it. Of course I lose them and of course it just had to be Christmas weekend when nothing is open and there was no way UPS/Fedex could deliver my keys to me before I had to leave.

I had two options:
a. have the car towed or leave it at the resort and come back for it after obtaining the spare set.

b. impose on my friends and have them drive me 10 hours round trip that very night to retrieve my spares.

Yes I reluctantly chose b. In retrospect, would a Mazda dealership had been open on Christmas eve and would they have been able to make me a new key (transponder) same day?

Re: Every lose your car keys on a trip?

i wonder if it's a good thing that we have transponders in our keys?

i heard it takes 3 days to get them done...so if i lost my keys somewhere far away without friends i would be stuck for the duration required for a local dealer to order the keys?

Re: Every lose your car keys on a trip?

i did in my civic. it was 30 minutes from home and on a 1 and 1/2 go cart track and i lost a single key(dumb i no(there is a longer story)) while driving the go cart. when i relized it was gone it had started raining so i walked this track in the rain looking for a single black key on a black toped track. i had called my mom to come get me when we re-checked the go cart i was in and it was lodged under the seat only seen with a flash light. we had to lift it upside down to get it out.

the key was to a 93 so no chip or anything and they wanted over150 to make one from the door lock. it was a happy ending to a long afternoon.

A coworker of mine was at a toll booth in Boston. He left his wallet in the trunk so they made him get out and get it to pay the toll. When opening the trunk he dropped the keys to his rental car which fell through a grate. What a nightmare! I doubt he'll ever leave his wallet in the trunk or will at least spring for a decent rental car.

Re: Every lose your car keys on a trip?

They called and had the car towed out of the toll lane. He then had to wait for Hertz to come with extra keys. Ended up costing him $$.
