Odometer Rollback Help...

A buddy of mine is trying to sell a Jeep that he bought back in 2004.. When he bought it the odometer said 102,000 miles, and he bought it from a private seller. Skip ahead to today and he is trying to sell it, the odometer reads 130,000 miles... Now he got an offer and the guy was said he would buy it buy it, they said a meeting date and he got a deposit... BUT all of a sudden he gets a phone call from the guy saying he ran a carfax on it and it says back in 2002 it had 173,000 miles on it and also in 2000 it had 186,000 miles on it!!!!!!!!! So that deal fell though.... Is there anything that can be done about this or is he just SOL???

Re: Odometer Rollback Help...

For buddy of yours i would say why did he purchase a vehicle without doing a carfax report? Ok, lets say he screwed up and now he has to figure out how to sell his jeep! If I was his I would go to Carfax and get all the history of the vehicle to be able to aproximate REAL mileage as close as possible, to me it seems he should have over 200,000 miles on it. At some point i think vehicle might have had engine swapped, find ot what is the VIN number on the engine and compare it with the vehicle. If he finds proof that vehicle had mileage rolled back than he needs to prove it in everyway, it is illegal to roll back your mileage so he could at least try to get some answers from a previous owner, but all of it comes to "why buying a vehicle at first place without a carfax report?". At this point I would say he can do something by tracking all of the previous owners, how? I dont know but maybe carfax specifies or has info of where or who was the previous owner of the vehicle, little digging should be done, as soon as he tracks the first owner sho rolled the mileage he can do much more than just sit at home and think to himself "What the f$%& am I supposed to do now?". I think it wont be easy and little too much of a headache, and the only sollution without a hassle is to estimate the mileage which should be on the vehicle and sell it with honesty that way he will be able to sell it faster, of course he wont get his money back for what he paid for it but that should be resolved with the previous owner who he purchased it from.

Re: Odometer Rollback Help...

If you can't estimate the milage just tell your friend to be up front about it. Just have him tell potential buyers that he isn't sure of the true milage of the vehicle because he found out recently that a previous owner had rolled back the milage on the odometer.

Re: Odometer Rollback Help...

Just like they do for vehciles with 5 digit odometers, you just have to state "true mileage unknown".
that may hurt the resale value, as people will know that someone was tampering with it. Although that's what is happening when people run the carfax report anyway.

Or he could be unethical and just continue to non-disclose and hope he finds a sucker. I think that's illegal though . . . . .
