Best Sports Car Roads
What are your favorite twisty roads? What's the best day driving you ever had? Although I've lived all over the U.S., I like the mountain roads. My 2 current favorites are California Highway 36, in NorCal, from Red Bluff to Eureka; and the Sonora Pass over the Sierras (just north of Yosemite) and down to U.S. 395.
If you like elevation changes (bikers, too!) Hwy. 36 is 120 miles of racetrack that starts in oak tree and foothill country in Red Bluff and heads west, over the coast range to 6-thousand feet, and down into a redwood forest, south of Eureka. The whole road is banked. It's incredible! On the very top, you do about 20-miles of single lane black top, complete with the occasional log truck.
Bearing in mind that you have to be extremely careful and focused for 4-hours, I think Hwy. 36 is the most fun you can have in the front seat. In September, I met 2 bikers from England on the redwood side who had flown their 60's racing bikes over to make the run. Later on the Red Bluff end, I met a guy with a beautiful old Porsche 959 AWD. His buddy in a Mustang was running it first as radar rabbit.
Finally, my other current favorite is the Sonora Pass, north of Yosemite (highway 80-something I think). You start in Sonora, California and wind up on the east side of the Sierras. You cross the Sonora Pass at 9,600 feet on a beautiful little manicured 2-laner, which is closed in the winter. I sat up on top for awhile and watched guys with big smiles on their faces zoom by in a parade of high $ motorcars. Motorcycles and bicycles, too.
What about you?
