Just lost my best friend

After a coming home from a great camping trip over the weekend, my 11 year old Rott Maggie had a tumor in her abdomen rupture and I had to put her down. We had no idea it was there until it was too late. She lived a wonderful life full of love and joy and she will be greatly missed. She has had diabetes for the last couple of years and would get insulin twice daily and had been doing great. Here are a few pictures from her very last day with us.

My wife and I are now starting the search for a new puppy.

Thank you for letting me share with you.

Re: Just lost my best friend

I'm sorry for your loss. My family had to put down my dog in march because he had a growth in his abdomen that ruptured as well, so i feel your pain.

Re: Just lost my best friend

So sorry for you and your wife's loss. My rotty, Andy, developed a limp during the winter of 1998 and I took him to the vet and found he had bone cancer. What a shock, he never whined about it, just limped. I thought he sprained his leg on the ice in my yard. I was desvatated, he was a fine dog; to this day I miss him. Again, my condolences.

Good luck on your search.

Re: Just lost my best friend

I am so sorry for your loss. It is never easy losing a pet. My in-laws cat (16 years old) is suffering major health problems right now. He needs a pill and liquid medication twice a day and also IV fluids (actually not hard to give to a cat) every night due to poor kidney health. He is crotchity, but otherwise seems to not be suffering. Not sure how long my in-laws are planning on keeping him going, possibly till his quality of life truely declines, he has a touch of arthritis now, but otherwise he gets around fine and behaves just like any other normal older cat. I know they are dreading the day they might need to make the decision to put him down.

I hope your dog suffered very little and if it cheers you or your wife up any she probably had a wonderful life with you.

Ouch.....had this happen to me 4 days before Christmas last year. Chance was 13 years old, and he just collapsed. Lost all energy and wasn't able to move. Didn't look like he was in pain, but it was still tough to bear. Wasn't much fun at all...just take solace in all the good times you had. Best thing that you can do.

Re: Just lost my best friend

I'm sorry to hear that

We also have a big dog named Maggie (a Great Dane) and pugs. Again, sorry for your loss, I hate having to see animals suffer. My only advice is to not run out and buy a new puppy on impulse. Figure out what you really want beforehand.

Good luck.

Re: Just lost my best friend

So sorry! Rotties are THE BEST DOGS!! We had one we rescued, she was awesome, her name was Kayla... she was my protector, and would attack on command... we had to put her down 3 years ago. She was going blind, her legs were giving out on her, poor bladder control, she was just a horrible reck and the vet said the best thing to do was put her out of her misery... I miss her so much! We had her cremated so she's with us always! We adopted another rottie this past June, she's only a year old... nothing like Kayla though... Good luck on your search for a new dog... You will find the right one for you guys!

Thanks Matt and thank you to everyone else that has posted. I know that she had an incredibly happy life and I do not believe that she suffered much at all during those last hours. In many ways I was very blessed with her. It is never easy to lose a pet, but in the respect that she did not suffer a long and prolonged illness, I am very thankful.

One thing that really touched me at the time she was at the vet, after they were done, they gave me a clay impression of her paw print. I was in tears anyway, but that was really touching and I was not expecting that at all.

Anyway, thank you all again.
