Nice use of a Civic engine!!!

Mubarak Muhammad Abdullahi, a 24-year-old physics undergraduate in northern Nigeria, takes old cars and motorbikes to pieces in the back yard at home and builds his own helicopters from the parts.

It is powered by a second-hand 133 horsepower Honda Civic car engine and kitted out with seats from an old Toyota saloon car. Its other parts come from the carcass of a Boeing 747 which crashed near Kano some years ago.

At least its reliable and will get great gas mileage. Probably takes for ever for the blades to come up to speed though.

I'm shocked that it even has enough torque to lift the copter up off the ground.

Re: Nice use of a Civic engine!!!

Interesting. I can understand the very modest altitude (and I am assuming speed) of thing. It doesn't sound like it has any kind of collective to modify blade pitch, so I can't imagine that thing being very easy to control or being able to manage any real altitudes or speeds until he learns how to do that.

I am sure (okay, I am guessing) that the Nigerian gov't would be a lot more interested if he was able to build a more capable machine, which maybe he will be able to do eventually.
