I feel like that terrible person

So I was backing out of my space this morning and bumped another car. It didn't look like I had done any damage to it (I was almost stopped backing up when I went just a bit to far). I was going to write a note, but I didn't have anything to write with in my car with me. I waited for a minute or two but the owner did say come running out of their house (and not sure who owns the car). I am planning on writing a note and sticking it on the car when it is parked there tonight and/or tracking down the owner, but I still feel really bad that I didn't stick a note on their car this morning.

I basically backed into their tire and their wheel well caught the corners of my bumper. Maybe I did do some damage to their car (I didn't see any dents or paint transfer to their car), but when I got into work and looked at my bumper I had gotten some paint transfer on my car and left two small gouges (pretty tiny). A bit of a buff and a small amount of touch up paint and you won't even notice it on my car, but I feel really bad like maybe I did some damage to their car and I just didn't look close enough.

So apparently I am that terrible person (even though I will track down the owner).

PS On a side note, even though this was totally my fault, it has been annoying me for a long time that the person who owns the car has been parking it on the curb right behind my car for the longest time now when there are plenty of open parking spaces around that can't be more then an extra 20-30ft walk and don't make it so you nearly (or in this case needed to of) have to make a 3 point turn just to back out of your parking space.

Re: I feel like that terrible person

I guess something that makes me feel better is I told my wife as she was driving in and she didn't notice any damage at all to the car. Oh and turns out it is my neighbors wife's car. My wife apparently knew who owned it.

If there is no damage, no harm no foul.

Re: I feel like that terrible person

Yeah I got a good look at the damage on my bumper and it was a small amount of paint transfer, a very very slight bump and a few small scratches and maybe 4-5 small paint chips. 30 minutes with some scratch X and touch up paint and it is hardly noticable at more then 10ft, it is still pretty noticable up close though, but nothing that bad.

I am going to take a look at their car tonight and see if there is any damage. If there is I am going to talk to them about it. I figure if there is no damage at all no point in mentioning it.

PS by neighbor I should have said the people 2 doors down from us.

PPS out of curiousity do the body panels come painted or not if you order them. I assume not (mostly wondering because apparently out rear bumper cover is like $250 which is extremely cheap in my opinion).

Re: I feel like that terrible person

I would tell them either way man, honesty is the best policy here. Just be like "I would've left a note but I didn't have paper/time so I wanted to stop by and let you know what happened." Take a walk to their car and examine it together and ask them how they want to proceed if there is damage.

They definitely do not come painted.

Re: I feel like that terrible person

Yeah I told him about it. He was hugely pissed off at first until we looked at the car. Only damage was a tiny fleck off the very top of the wheel well (maybe half the size of my pinky nail, or a little smaller) and the hub cap was pushed in. The hub cap popped right out and there was no damage to the wheel underneath (god bless steel wheels). He cooled down right away after that and apologized for getting so pissed off (I mean he was literally screaming "WHAT THE HELL DID YOU F-IN DO!" and probably took 2 minutes to get him to calm down enough to even go and look at the car).

He basically agreed that there wasn't really any damage. I just told him afterward that I was still really sorry about it and I would try to be more careful, but that if he or his wife are going to park along the curb instead of in a parking space to try to pull as close to the curb as they can as it would make it easier for people to pull out (I didn't really say, "Instead of parking 2ft from the curb like you do&quot.

I gotta say that I am glad it didn't really do any damage to the car, but his initial reaction doesn't exactly make me feel all warm and fuzzy about having him as a neighbor.

Re: I feel like that terrible person

Kudos to you, Matt. I wish the douchebags who've given me parking lot damage had the decency to let me know... but instead, I have a small dent in the front fender, a couple gouges in the rear bumper, and no less than 4 door dings on a single door.
