Looking for feedback from college students or recent grads

Hey guys and girls
Here's the 411. I'm looking for some quick feedback.
I work for Follett. Our company runs college bookstores on university campuses.
Right now we are working on a new marketing campaign for our new buyback program.
We are trying to promote or entice students to take a mastercard gift card instead of cash back.
This way stores carry less cash. As of right now students would much rather have cash in their pockets.
My question to you guys/girls who are in school now what would entice you to take the mastercard gift card instead.
Some stores are offering an extra $5 gift cards on top of your cashback you received from selling your textbooks back
to places like McDonalds and Starbucks.
Any thoughts would be great.
Please make it realistic also. lol

I thought I would post here since alot of you guys are in school or have been.
Plus everyone is always so open and thoughtful.

Personally... I just want the cash. >_< Being a full-time college student, working full-time and having a car payment I need all the money I can get.

Although I'm sure some people would love the rewards cards to the fast food places.

Re: Looking for feedback from college students or recent grads

I graduated this past May and personally haven't even bothered selling books back during my junior and senior years of college. The amount of money offered wasn't even enough to entice me to sell them back ($20 return on a $150 texbook...) Anyways, I guess that is irrelevant, so back to your question. Personally, I would take the Mastercard gift card if something else was thrown in (such as the food/drink gift cards you suggested). I mean, the Mastercards are a cash equivalent already. The only drawback is that they sometimes have short expiration dates. Oh, and it can be time consuming to find out your balance. Other than that, I can't see why people would mind getting them back. I'd say to go for offering a small gift like you said. Ya can't complain about any extra money.

Re: Looking for feedback from college students or recent grads

I think that's a fine idea.. I wouldn't need "extra incentive" although starbucks gift cards would be hot

I always bought x-mas presents with book money in the Fall and beer in the summer so as long as stores and beer distributors except MasterCard I'd definitely be good to go.

EDIT* Just realized in my above sentence you've got an idea. Maybe you can get them discounts at mall shops like 10 - 40 % or something in the Fall. Not sure about summer since a lot of kids aren't all 21

Thanks for the feedback so far. The mastercard gift card never goes bad. It's almost like a credit card. It can be used in any brick and mortar store or any online store. I really think if a college student comes in who doesn't have a credit card should think about the gift card since you could pay your bills online with it or purchase items online that you couldn't in store.

Yes cash would be more practical. That's why we are trying to change the thinking to Mastercard gift cards..lol
That's why I am looking for ideas from students that would entice them to grab the Mastercard instead of the cash.
Like giving them the extra gift card to certain places.
What do you guys think about receiving an extra %5 on their total cashback if they take the gift card????

I don't think they realize that this mastercard is SAME AS CASH.
