I almost didn't reply and I'll probably regret that I did, BUT:
No it's not what itunes has been doing for months.  This is MP3, the format that will play in many factory and aftermarket car stereos and mp3 players that aren't ipod.  This is 256kbps and DRM free and it's the same price as the 128kbps DRM protected music that itunes sells.
Use it or not, doesn't matter to me.
Uh, dude, that's very inaccurate.  First off, this contains only music (pretty much) that iTunes Plus has (plus iTMS has a lot of exclusives), which is 256k unprotected mp4's, which any standard player will play.  Second, Amazon's prices vary - they are not all $0.99 - tehy range between about $0.89 and about $4 per song.
