In other words, what iTunes has already been doing for months... except with the more modern mp4 format.

I almost didn't reply and I'll probably regret that I did, BUT:

No it's not what itunes has been doing for months. This is MP3, the format that will play in many factory and aftermarket car stereos and mp3 players that aren't ipod. This is 256kbps and DRM free and it's the same price as the 128kbps DRM protected music that itunes sells.

Use it or not, doesn't matter to me.

Uh, dude, that's very inaccurate.  First off, this contains only music (pretty much) that iTunes Plus has (plus iTMS has a lot of exclusives), which is 256k unprotected mp4's, which any standard player will play.  Second, Amazon's prices vary - they are not all $0.99 - tehy range between about $0.89 and about $4 per song.

Hmmm.... I wasn't aware that Itunes even offered drm free music in mp3/4 format- that's very enticing for me since I DJ with a system called serato by rane which basically syncs up your turntables to your digital music. Up to now my Itunes music doesn't work on it because its crappy apple files.

It has for months, based on the same deal that allows Amazon to operate. The deal that allows the Amazon DRM-free store to work was a deal originally signed by Apple & EMI, but it was broader than that - it allowed any store to use EMI's catalogue DRM-free. Since then, Apple has also added a lot of independent labels to the DRM free "iTunes Plus" store. I'm sure Amazon has many of them as well.

Apple's files are 256k MP4 priced at $1.29 per song or no additional cost per album (same price as the DRM'd files). Amazons are 256k MP3's with variable pricing between (from what I've seen) $0.89 and $3.87.
