First in-traffic stall AHHHH

Alright, I'm not a total newbie at driving stick, but I really gotta double check my gear before launching. Today at a traffic light with cars behind me, I was accidentally in third and it died on me. ARRRGH. How embarrassing! Oh well. Now I know why my bro seems figgity playin' with the stick at a light - yes maybe it's compulsive, but it also makes sure you're in first gear! I am usually pretty good about it, so I must have just not shifted after stopping in the first place.

Live and learn. I'm still getting the hang of down-shifting - particularly practicing throttle blip so there's no jerkiness. Don't think I really learned that before because I used to drive my bro's old (87?) Jetta that didn't have a hydraulic clutch, so man was it stiff and made shifting a work out! That clutch and this one are like night and day.

Anyway, for those just learning stick, I feel your pain. I was there once before and now am back in it again. It's getting smoother, and I have to keep reminding myself it takes time. Just gotta "stick" with it patiently and keep practicing.

Re: First in-traffic stall AHHHH

LOL, I remember the first time I drove stick. It was my buddies 93 Ford Probe GT. Shifting from 2nd to 3rd and so and, as well as down shifting came ez to me. However I always stalled the damn thing. So whenever I drove it, I got tired of stalling it, I always just launched it and chirped tires.

I would like my next car to be Manual. But it doesn't look like Ford is getting the hint with the V6 Fusion. It's comparable to the Nissan Altima which has a 6speed in its V6.

When if Ford going to wake up and .

Yeah, once I got the thing back started, I chirped like a mofo and got outta dodge before the light turned red. Good thing the Highway Patrol who had just crossed the intersection was farther down the road

I know the feeling... I took an RX-8 out on a test drive about a month ago & thought I stalled it out at a light, so I tried to start it up again but turns out i didn't really stall it just gave it a little too much clutch

**not on this forum and not unless its in a for sale thread.

LOL... good memories. We've all been there. And if we haven't. We will be some day.

I took my wife for a MTX refresher lesson in the 3 recently (driving 500+ miles and she hadn't driven stick in three years).

She did pretty good. Stalled a few times during practice. Not on the trip though. I DID shift her through the entrance ramp from the rest stop.

Re: First in-traffic stall AHHHH

Wow, I just realized it has been five years since I last drove stick. My only refresher before getting the 3 recently was a couple hour drive with my friend's old ass Civic with no power steering. I think there's no power steering and then I think there was this car - it was friggin' hard as hell to turn the wheel when getting started! So basically five complete years of no stick driving. Even when I was driving stick, it was only that one summer in '02. So I guess I take comfort that I'm doing alright considering I haven't had more than a few month stint at driving stick on my own.

It was a lot easier to learn with gas was only $.90/gallon. "Hey guys, pile in! I'll drive." Ah... the good ol' days.

You ever see a clutch disk shatter? Mine did.

Wow - nope, never seen that. Gas is still cheaper than water and despite its dollar value, isn't that high in price compared to decades before. But most people just think in terms of the $ amount. I guess I had that same visceral reaction to when candy bars started going from $0.33 to $0.50

I still take the 3 out at night "just to drive". The other night was practicing downshifting. I find night driving much more relaxing, especially with the moonroof open Still have a harder time when driving in my sandals...lol...it all feels different.
