I'm building a website and I need your help!!! Techies unite!

I came up with an idea for a website that kinda spawns from the youtube phenomenon, but I have no idea what I am doing so I am looking for some guidance on where to start.
I am about to register a domain name on godaddy.com. Is that a goodplace to go or should I start somewhere else.

Also, what are some good websites to go to where I can study and learn, or good books to read.
I have a friend who went to school for web design but I am trying to get something started before I talk to him, so until then I am wondering if you all have some advice.

Like I said, my first question is
-Do you recommend godaddy.com
If not, what is a good sight.
Then I will go from there

Lets just start with godaddy.com
Has anyone used it before or heard any good/bad things about it?

I use GoDaddy.com; I have 8-10 domain names purchased from them. There sales/tech support is great and friendly.

Sweet! Thanks!

Now with godaddy.com, my options on what I can do with the website are endless right?
I am just buying the domain name, not the actual website format itself right?

Re: I'm building a website and I need your help!!! Techies unite!

I registered my domain on 1and1.com and get my hosting from websavers.ca
My friend owns websavers.

There are TONS of websites and books on webdesign! There are courses on it too. It depends how far you want to get into it.
Coding a website is different than designing one. Two usually go hand in hand, however if you can't do one or the other, you are a bit screwed.

Re: I'm building a website and I need your help!!! Techies unite!

steps....

1. register a domain
2. get hosting
3. design a website
4. code the website
5. content
6. publish website to hosting service
7. enjoy.

Usually I design and code the website before i buy the domain or hosting. So I am not paying money for that stuff when the website isn't even live yet. But it depends on your idea and if you want to reserve the domain or not. Its usually pretty cheap for domains nowadays anyways.

Re: I'm building a website and I need your help!!! Techies unite!

I have a buddy that uses 1and1.com for hosting; they are actually really cheap. I have my won servers for the sites I own/host. So all I am doing is paying for the domain name. Space and email accounts, are not an issue.

But I agree with bossboy; if you are just starting from scratch; I would design/code the site first. Then register a domain name, find hosting and test the site. Then, start advertising online and/or locally.

That's just my 2 cents.

Re: I'm building a website and I need your help!!! Techies unite!

I was thinking of just paying for the domain name and not getting any of the features just so I can make sure I have the name.
Then possibly having a friend doing the coding and that stuff himself.

I am a complete noob at this stuff but I have plenty of time on my hands to learn.

Did you guys take classes for this stuff?
Where's a good place to learn coding and stuff outside of classes?
I took one computer programming class in high school, but that was 6 years ago and I remember nothing

So you don't recommend buying the domain name first just to assure that I own it?
