Atleast we have more freedom than Iran

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070722...n_070722152958

TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran is to launch a new crackdown Monday on slack dressing that targets both men and women whose clothing and haircuts are deemed to be unIslamic, police said.

"The police will act against those whose trousers are too short, have skin-tight coats, shirts with Western logos and Western hairstyles," said Ahmad Reza Radan, the head of Tehran's police force.

"We will ask those arrested where they bought their clothes and where they had their hair cut so those outlets can be closed down," state broadcasting's website quoted him as saying.

Radan said anyone arrested would receive a warning and have their name added to a list. "If they reoffend, there will be no pardon."

Since the drive began in April, thousands have been warned and hundreds arrested across Iran for failing to adhere to the country's Islamic dress code, its toughest such crackdown in years.

Women in Iran are obliged to cover all bodily contours and their heads but in recent years many have pushed the boundaries by showing off bare ankles and fashionably styled hair beneath their headscarves.

Some women still don figure-hugging coats and skimpy headscarves despite the April crackdown. By renewing the drive, it appears the police want to send a message that they are serious about enforcing the dress rules.

Many conservatives have applauded the crackdown as important to protect the security of society, but moderates have publicly questioned whether Iran would be better off tackling poverty and crime rather than slack dressing.

No, I think the dress code is more important than poverty or crime, even combined.

Obviously.

Re: Atleast we have more freedom than Iran

I think whatever part of the body is unclothed should be chopped off!

*sigh*

Yeah I think that sort of thing is ridiculous. I personally think anything that is enforcing dress codes or morals on people is a bad idea unless it is truely a public health concern (such as smoking...at least second hand smoking, (arguably) under age drinking or (not arguably) drinking and driving, you could argue drugs, etc).

Even though the US is a lot better about it we still do it to some degree. If we didn't gambling would be legalized every where in the US and public nudity would be fine.

Of course I am taking that one to an extreme, I personally wouldn't want to see that...but then again that would also be applying some of my morals on society.

PS please no public nudity. Its fine for the hot chicks, but I don't need to see naked dudes walking around let alone some 67 year old fat ass woman. I don't think my willy would ever get hard again if I had to see that sort of crap when I am out in public.

Does anyone else see a problem with us thinking that other countries don't have "freedom" like we do because of the choices they make?

Re: Atleast we have more freedom than Iran

I think the religion of the land has something to do with it... a concept we are unfamiliar with in America because we have no such thing. I'm not arguing whether it's good or bad, just offering that we might be looking at it the wrong way.

Iran is not a dictatorship. It's a republic with judicial, executive and legislative branches under a supreme leader. They even have a Constitution. Their constitution, however, says that government authority is derived from both God and the people.

An important thing to keep in mind is that their religion is very closely intertwined with their government. We believe in separation of state and church. That simple thing makes all the world of difference, but it doesn't mean we are justified in judging them.

Oh, by the way, I'm not arguing that their government isn't corrupt... but then again, who's isn't?

Re: Atleast we have more freedom than Iran

eh it is their country's tradtion due to religion. if they dont like it, they could overthrow the president with a rebel group and call on another country to help out. or just gain the attention of NATO and we could talk to them? idk.

the world is getting really lenient. no proper anything in america. every kid thinks they are a gangster now, but 30 years ago when parents could spank their kids and be okay, kids wanted to be something sucessful.. not the next 50 cent.
