Is this racism?

I'll start off by saying I personally am not racist. I couldn't care less about the color of someones skin or where they came from. So here we go...

My co-worker sent this to me today. What she did was copy facts about the channel BET and changed the wording to reflect if the channel was selling itself to the white market, instead of the black one.

If you read this, would you concider it to be racist?....

White Channel is the leading provider of media and entertainment for White Americans and consumers of White culture on a global basis.

White Channel was founded by Robert L. Johnson. The programming was mostly older movies and music videos, creating an outlet for an untapped market in the then-young cable industry, White-Americans. In May of that year, White Channel invested $1 million for the production of White collegiate sporting events and expanded an hour.

Throughout the decades, White Channel has grown in viewer ship and expanded beyond television. In October 1989, White Channel entered the publishing business by launching their first magazine Emerge, aimed toward White-American news consumers. A little under a year later, White Channel launched YSB (Young Sisters and Brothers), a lifestyle magazine aimed toward White-American teenagers followed by the purchase of Caucasian Books, a publisher of White-American-oriented romance novels. White channel also launched spin-off networks in the 1990s, including White Channel Starz!, which became White Starz! after the Viacom takeover and renamed Starz InWhite in 2005.

White Channel also airs White-American interest specials and introduced public service campaigns.

And that's it. So, is that weird to read now that the words are changed?

Re: Is this racism?

Whether it's actually racism or not, you can bet that it would spark a fair bit of controversy and allegations of racism on the part of "White Channel".

Re: Is this racism?

i think it depends on how you look at it. personally i never really liked the name of said channel. but i'm sure one would consider that to be racist the same way they might consider we, oxygen & lifetime to be sexist stations. do i personally think it's racist? no. but that's just my opinion.

Agreed.

Also, the only thing I was thinking about when reading it was people with white paint dumped on them, lol.

Re: Is this racism?

not racist. It's a media outlet targeted towards a specific demographic, defined by skin color. If Cable Company X carried White Channel or BET but refused to carry the other one, THAT'S racism.

Personally, I think White Channel would fail miserably for being too broad. BET may target "blacks", but black culture in the US is pretty well defined. Even allowing for the regional differences that separate, for example, the LA black community from the NY black community, there is still a somewhat definable "black community" based on art, language, etc. Personally, I think that the media outlets that target this community are hugely responsible for the creation, definition, and continued limitation thereof, but that's neither here nor there.

Contrast that with "White People", who really don't exist as any actual identifiable marketable culture. And if you try to define said culture as "educated and well-off", which is a marketers dream demo, then you would be both wrong and accused of racism.

The truth is that people run the gamut from illiterate fuckwad to brilliant PhD in both groups. I know plenty of black people on both ends of that spectrum, and while some of them have rather broad interests in art and music, most of them prefer or enjoy things that we would label as "black", even bordering on stereotypical. The only thing every white person I know has in common is that we like to clap our hands when we dance for some stupid reason.

you can get money for being white, you just don't want to be associated with any of the groups who would give it to you.

Come on now, murph, that's unfair! Some of us have the common sense to not even bother trying to dance in the first place.

Re: Is this racism?

hmm. I've never lived in a place that gets BET. Wasn't even offered in CT, and I think it might be a premium channel or something in Boston, if it's offered at all.

consider yourself lucky, unless you really enjoy Usher videos and like to catch up on Grambling football.

I kid, I kid.
