Little Miss Sunshine - The most overrated movie in years?

Watched it over the weekend with my wife, and 20 minutes into it I could tell what an overrated mess it is. There are no genuine characters or situations, and every action and motivation seems either forced or contrived. And there are subplots that go nowhere. It's as if the writers thought, "Hey, let's make each character quirky, put them in some quirky situations, and watch the hilarity ensue. Oh, and we might just fool those awards people into thinking it's a good script." Well, it seems they've succeeded.

The only likeable character in the entire movie is the little girl, Olive, played by Abagail Breslin. But the talent competition at the end of the movie removed any sympathy I had for her character. If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about, but it's incredibly distasteful and really embarrassing. Note to the writers of this crap: just because a situation is risque or a little shocking doesn't mean it's funny. In this case, it's just in bad taste.

Believe me, I'm not a prude or "holier than thou." I like stupid, disgusting films that are funny (Animal House, There's Something About Mary, Kingpin, etc.) and films with quirky characters. But this movie has characters that are goofy for the sake of being goofy, and that's not funny.

For those who have seen this movie, let me know what you think. I can't believe it won the Producers Guild award and the SAG award. If it wins Best Picture at the Oscars, it will prove once and for all that Hollywood is really out of touch with reality, and that they themselves are now officially recognizing mediocrity.

Re: Little Miss Sunshine - The most overrated movie in years?

I'll agree that it was over rated (I just watched it a few weeks ago) but I still think it was a very good film. I believe that it did make some exaggerations over a typical screwed up family, but sometimes embellishment is a great way to get a story (and point) across to an audience. The point that I got was that even the most screwed up individuals can come together for each other.

Was it the best movie in years? No. Would I recommend people see it? Definitely. Much like Requiem for a Dream.... though that movie was hardly happy. I like that movie tons just because there isn't a happy ending.

requiem for a dream is one of the greatest cinema achievements in my eyes. rarely have i witnessed a movie so emotionally draining and profoundly heartbreaking.

wait, oh yeah, little miss sunshine... i actually just watched it last night. to me, it was a typical "people forced to spend time with each other and everyone finds themselves somehow along the way" movie. it wasn't bad, it wasn't great enough to purchase and it did make me snicker a few times. i've no doubt some people will absolutely love it but it was most certainly nothing special and groundbreaking to me. it was really nothing more than a dumbed down national lampoon's "vacation" movie with some slightly serious overtones. you're right though, the subplots go nowhere and are essentially useless filler. the job situation, the suicide, the vow of silence, etc... no resolutions at all so why bother bringing them up when the time could have been devoted to, y'know... a story.

i don't get the hype behind it at all. must've been a slow year for movies. steve carrell, however, was his excellent self as always.

I love independent films. Have any of you seen 'Secretary' with Maggie Gyllenhaal? I love that movie!

Little Miss Sunshine was a bad movie. I agree.

Not even worth half the hype it got.

I'm really not trying to threadjack here, but you hit the nail on the head with 'emotionally draining.' I really felt like I was punched in the gut by the end of the movie. I wanted so badly for everything to be OK for these folks that I ended up caring for. Watching the downward spiral, seeing the outcome, and not being able to do a damned thing about it was so real, so powerful. That is what cinema should be all about.

I didn't read any of the 'hype' of this movie and barely knew anything about the movie. However, wifey and I rented it a few weeks ago.

We enjoyed the movie a great deal (minus the usage of the 'f-word' like 101 times). The characters were entertaining and it was a dysfunctional family at its best. The dance during the beauty pageant was HYSTERICAL!!

It was not 'film of the year' or anything, but the little girl deserves her props. She was good stuff.

I would recommend this film to others.

The thing I liked best about it was the broken horn on the van. At that time, it was extra funny because immediately afterwards, I was engaged in a game of Taboo with my family. And if anyone has played that game, you know about that pathetic-sounding buzzer... it bears a striking resemblance to that van's horn. I think maybe you kinda had to be there...
