Little Miss Sunshine - The most overrated movie in years?
Watched it over the weekend with my wife, and 20 minutes into it I could tell what an overrated mess it is. There are no genuine characters or situations, and every action and motivation seems either forced or contrived. And there are subplots that go nowhere. It's as if the writers thought, "Hey, let's make each character quirky, put them in some quirky situations, and watch the hilarity ensue. Oh, and we might just fool those awards people into thinking it's a good script." Well, it seems they've succeeded.
The only likeable character in the entire movie is the little girl, Olive, played by Abagail Breslin. But the talent competition at the end of the movie removed any sympathy I had for her character. If you've seen the film, you'll know what I'm talking about, but it's incredibly distasteful and really embarrassing. Note to the writers of this crap: just because a situation is risque or a little shocking doesn't mean it's funny. In this case, it's just in bad taste.
Believe me, I'm not a prude or "holier than thou." I like stupid, disgusting films that are funny (Animal House, There's Something About Mary, Kingpin, etc.) and films with quirky characters. But this movie has characters that are goofy for the sake of being goofy, and that's not funny.
For those who have seen this movie, let me know what you think. I can't believe it won the Producers Guild award and the SAG award. If it wins Best Picture at the Oscars, it will prove once and for all that Hollywood is really out of touch with reality, and that they themselves are now officially recognizing mediocrity.
