Awesome... my university is in the news

... but not in a good way.

A female student at my school is suspected of being the mother of a baby found dead in the trunk of a car.

I overheard the news reporter talking about a baby found dead earlier tonight as I was walking to the parking garage. She was interviewing some students in front of the library to get their opinion. I checked the website of the news agency that was filming there, and sure enough... I found the story.

(CBS 3) UPPER DARBY Police are investigating the disturbing discovery of a newborn found dead in the trunk of a car in Delaware County.

Authorities said a full-term baby boy was found stuffed in a bag inside a 2001 Volkswagen parked in the driveway of a home on Drexel Avenue Monday night.

According to sources, police believe the mother of the dead baby is a local college student. Late Tuesday night, the investigation shifted to Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Detectives spent part of Tuesday evening questioning students about the woman they believe gave birth to the boy. However, a suspect has not been publicly identified by police.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, detectives held a press conference detailing the troubling discovery.

“This baby was entombed after birth in a tote bag and put inside the trunk of a car,” said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.

Defense Attorney Art Donato told CBS 3 he contacted police after he was contacted by his client, who discovered the body.

Investigators said there is no initial indication of foul play, but an autopsy will be performed.

The tragic discovery of the child raised many questions and emotions amongst police.

“There’s a lot of other options out there instead of taking a small child and shoving it in a tote bag,” Chitwood said. “I think it’s cruel and sad and tragic."

One of those options is Pennsylvania's Safe Haven Program. The program was enacted in order to provide frightened parents alternatives to abandonment. Under Safe Haven, all hospitals in the state are required to accept newborns up to 28 days old without question as long as the baby is unharmed. The child is then given proper medical care before being placed up for adoption.

Investigators now believe they know who gave birth to the child and are working to interview those involved. Once the interviews are complete, Chitwood expects an arrest would be made.

“The brick wall is people refusing to cooperate with us,” Chitwood said.

If the medical examiner rules the baby was alive, not stillborn, the charges could include murder.

Police said they plan to get a search warrant for the college student's DNA.

"I don’t think there was a murder committed here, I have no reason to believe that anyone had any malice towards this child, said Donato.

If you have any information, contact Upper Darby Police.

I'm curious to find out who the mother is. What a shame.

How do you make a dead baby float?

Take a dead baby. Add root beer.

Re: Awesome... my university is in the news

California has a similar program, but it includes police departments and fire stations as well as hospitals...

If the baby was alive when born, the mother should fry...there is no reason not to use the Safe Haven program...
