The beauty of America

You cant make this stuff up. A thrift shop/charity (nonprofit) in Salem is closing next month. Oh i'm sorry, its being closed down. While providing services to hundreds of people affected with AIDS and their families, there was someone they neglected. The IRS. Apparently the group had not filed their taxes correctly in two years and now owed over $5000 to the government. I think this a sad and disturbing event. Yet another reason to be ashamed of our government.

Re: The beauty of America

Typical....You understand that if it was a non profit organization it would be legally exempt from paying taxes? Even if it wasn't, they could have still have filed as a public charity and then became exempt from taxes.
Another reason to be ashamed of the citizens our gov't serves....

Yeah, I don't really think the government's to blame for the shop incorrectly (or fraudulently?) filing their tax returns. I mean, it sucks and all, but is the government really supposed to give them a free ride just cuz they're good people?

In my opinion.....yes. Unlike most people out there just doing stuff to make money, this group was helping those in need.

uh; why don't they pay the $5,000 ? the government even lets you make installment payments to pony up that cash over a period of time. In fact... I bet it'll cost them more than $5,000 to get rid of their inventory and clean out the store.

Because the proceeds were going to help people with needs, not into someones pocket. If the govt wanted money they should remove food stamps. Or better yet, quit letting the pres and his 4 helpers hop onto a 747 for a weekend getaway. Or remove those ungainly SUV's from the motor pool.

Re: The beauty of America

yeah... so let's say the storeowner has *no* supply of cash on hand (like, impossible for a not-for-profit-business ... but I'll assume this anyway).

There are some forms you can file and you pay a slight penalty... ooo big deal. So then maybe you charge every person an extra $0.50 on top of what you normally would have charged... pigeonhole those proceeds away and in a few months it's all happy snappy. It's not like everybody shopping at the thrift store is just pennies away from blowing their budget and giong bankrupt... and people who rely on the cheapness of the store for their kids clothes will probably realize a temporal overpay of $0.25 or $0.50 is worth it in the long run. But then most people may be myopic and short sighted.

I bet the bigger issue is the owner/operator of the thrift store is making a statement by shutting down his charitable-efforts 'cause the IRS is sticking it to him.

Re: The beauty of America

The IRS "stuck it to" me when I fucked up a tax return in college. It was my mistake, and I ended up with a bill for over 2 grand. It was money that I rightfully owed, so I sucked it up and payed it back over an installment program. So yeah, no sympathy here--you fuck up, you make it right. You don't get pissed at the person who caught you fucking up.

Maybe there are extenuating circumstances that would change the story--but if it's just a good guy who screwed up his taxes, then he needs to do what every other good guy does when they screw up. If you want to protest the government, then not paying taxes is a pretty dumbass way to go about it--you're not going to win, and you're just going to piss off the rest of the country who does pay taxes.

Re: The beauty of America

Well I feel no pity for the govt and resent every dime they TAKE from my paycheck. If I have to pay, I at least want a say in where it goes.
