Am I the only one scared by this? Privatization of Lotteries, Roads

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/23/bu...rtner=homepage

I'm way too lazy to copy the whole article.

Basically IL and IN are considering putting their public lottery systems up for sale - IL's could go for $10 Billion. In addition, they've already sold off some public roads, and NJ is considering selling the NJ Turnpike.

Am I the only one scared by all that? The article lists lots of good reasons not to sell the public lotteries to private companies, but as far as I am concerned, it boils down to this:

I am a very pro-free-market person. However, these aren't free market systems. Roadways, and especially lotteries, are exclusive monopolies (the lotteries in particular are being sold as monopolies). Even though they have to comply with state rules & regs, how powerful of a lobby would they be, over time?

That scares me.

In addition, it seems like, in IL's case at least, the money wouldn't be increased all that much (if they spend it over like 10 years) from what they get from just running the lottery system as it is - and it'd only last, in my example, 10 yrs.

The selling of roads thing also reminds me of Neal Stephensons Snow Crash, if anyone has read that.

as much as I believe the government (especially local government) to be entirely incompetent, and as much as I think a group of 4 year olds could do a better job with road management in my area, I really don't like the idea of giving a private company ownership of public roads.

Yeah... plus as that article points out, private companies can be (and have been) hired to MANAGE lotteries (and roads), without actually selling them off.

The selling of public entities, such as state lotteries and state highways, to the private sector is just plain wrong. What's next, selling the state police to Brinks? These proposals are shortsighted ideas and should be rejected, challenged in court.

the lottery is a bad idea, thats for sure.

but, fyi, before the big breakup of GM back in the late 50's because of their monoply, they convinced the government to take control of the roads in america (through bribing and etc)...unlike railroad companies who have to maintain their own tracks.

but yea, there're way more roads than railroads, but not back in the day. it was all dirt. before seatbelts haha.

if someone takes over the turnpike, expect prices to go way up especially if they fix the roads...kind bunk.

overall, its a dumb idea, and the govt. is just tryin to make some scrilla.

RR's are subsidized the highest amount of any type of transportation - including roads - in America, per mile.
