Dead Ipod

Yeah so I am driving around doing all of my Christmas shopping on this past Thursday and half way through the day, my iPod in my 3 desides to give me the sad face ipod display. I have had it for about a year and 7 months now, its one of the 30GB iPod photos, right before they came out with the video ones. I looked on the iPod support website and tried reset it but it wont get rid of that sad face icon after I reset it. The support page told me since nothing worked I needed to take it in for service. I started filling out the online form to see how much it would be and when I finished it was it was going to be about $275. wtf mate? I can buy a new video iPod for that!!

So does anybody have any advice? Should I find an Apple store or should I just buy another one? Is a year and a half a good life on the iPods? I took mine through hell (also known as a deployment to the desert in Africa for 7 months) so maybe that finally caught up to it.

Re: Dead Ipod

Mine did the same (when I was in EUROPE for 3 weeks at the beginning of my trip), but all I did was plug it in when I got home and it was fine. I'm guessing you weren't so lucky.

My friend sent hers in to Apple, and they replaced it for free, I have no idea why yours would be $275. It must be past warranty. For $275, get a new iPod and in-ear headphones.

Take it to the Apple store (maybe Fry's), see what they can do. If they can't do anything I'd settle on a new iPod.

Re: Dead Ipod

I've got a 4th gen ipod (use it from 4-8 hours everyday at work) and my son has a 2nd gen ipod and both are still going strong, although the charge time on my son's is only a couple hours and will probably need a battery replacement soon. So 1 year and 7 months is way to short a lifetime in my opinion, time to call up Apple and see what they will do for you.

Re: Dead Ipod

Yeah, mine has locked up prob 5 times and I jsut plug it in and it works again but this time it wont work. I believe my iPod had a 1 year warrenty so it is past it already. I only use it attached to my PIE adapter in my car and when I workout so if it ends up being like $200+ to fix it, I might as well just get one of the smaller ones.

Re: Dead Ipod

I have the same iPod as you, basically (4th gen color, mine is 60 gb instead of 30 though, and doesn't actually use the photo name - it was after they all were photos). I dumped beer all over mine and Apple replaced it for free back in like September. I would assume I was still in warranty - probably right at the end of it.

Might as well bring it to the Apple store and see if they can do anything at the genius bar. If it's out of warranty, they probably won't do too much, but they're usually good people and at least will give it a quick look.

If not, well, iPods have certainly advanced since then, and it isn't the end of the world to get a new one

You have to make an appointment, remember.

You live in one of them big states, that sucks We have an apple store like every 5 miles in the northeast.

But hey, at least you can buy a new one if they can't fix the old one, if you go to the Apple store.

Re: Dead Ipod

1.5-2 years seems to be fairly typical life on an iPod. sucks but it is what it is.

the only advise i can give: if the problem is the battery, you should just buy a 3rd party battery and install it yourself. that brought my roommates 1.5 years old ipod mini back to life. or try and sell it on ebay/craigslist and make whatever you can from it.

Re: Dead Ipod

Ok I finally got to an Apple store over in Tampa and I checked it again right before I went there and it still gave me the same sad-face ipod message. I walk into the store and go to the Genius bar and he turns it on and it works. !!!! He didnt even touch it with anything else.. he plugged his earphones in and it was playing music. He said that the hard drive might be going but he said to jsut bring it back in if it stops again and they will look at it more. So now I have my ipod back.. just in time.. i was getting tired of all the commercials on the radio
