Let's just BAN Christmas, and whatever else....

It's impossible to please everyone these days. I fear this country is headed for the crapper, ripped apart from within.

SEATAC, Wash. (AP) All nine Christmas trees have been removed from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport instead of adding a giant Jewish menorah to the holiday display as a rabbi had requested.

Maintenance workers boxed up the trees during the graveyard shift early Saturday, when airport bosses believed few people would notice.

"We decided to take the trees down because we didn't want to be exclusive," said airport spokeswoman Terri-Ann Betancourt. "We're trying to be thoughtful and respectful, and will review policies after the first of the year."

Rabbi Elazar Bogomilsky, who made his request weeks ago, said he was appalled by the decision. He had hired a lawyer and threatened to sue if the Port of Seattle didn't add the menorah next to the trees, which had been festooned with red ribbons and bows.

"Everyone should have their spirit of the holiday. For many people the trees are the spirit of the holidays, and adding a menorah adds light to the season," said Bogomilsky, who works at Chabad Lubavitch, a Jewish education foundation headquartered in Seattle's University District.

After consulting with lawyers, port staff believed that adding the menorah would have required adding symbols for other religions and cultures in the Northwest. The holidays are the busiest season at the airport, Betancourt said, and staff didn't have time to play cultural anthropologists.

Hanukkah begins this Friday at sundown.

"They've darkened the hall instead of turning the lights up," said his lawyer, Harvey Grad. "There is a concern here that the Jewish community will be portrayed as the Grinch."

Oy vey...Chabad has always been very extreme in the Jewish community. I'm Jewish and I don't take offense if I see a holiday tree during this time of year. I actually enjoy them.

I hope people who aren't Jewish look at this and think all Jews feel this way.

Re: Let's just BAN Christmas, and whatever else....

I think things like this are completely inane wastes of our time and energy. But on the other hand, I can I can kind of see where the airport was coming from in making their decisions. At some point down the line, after they had put up hanukkah decorations, and kwanza decorations, etc at the request of the respective curtural/religious groups, they would have to draw the line and just stop taking requests. And whatever group they drew the line at would inevitably raise a stink about being excluded, and sue the airport. At which point, they'd either get to repeat the cycle or just take down all the decorations altogether. With our pussified PC society, I really don't think that there was any way out of that ending, so at least they just cut to the chase and did what was going to happen anyways.

I'll put it this way, Anyone can practice any religion that they want in this country. Every religion is welcome, everyone is free to practice! What I don't understand is, Why everyone expects us to be tolerant of their practices yet they have no tolerance for the Christian religion. The fact is that this country was founded by people who had a strong belief in christianity. If for where no other reason but to preserve history the removel of christian artifacts and traditions has to stop. If you are intolerant to other cultures, stay out of our country!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christmas is not a religious holiday to me (i.e. I don;t celebrate it in a religious way). Christmas is a holiday to appreciate the people you have in your life. The christmas tree is just a symbol of getting together with loved ones...I decorated the tree with my mom last night.....aside from a couple arguments, it went well

So, I wouldn't care if a place decided to have Christmas decorations, Hannukah decorations, Kwanzaa etc.

I do understand the airports point that if you add decorations for one religion, you have to put some up for others as well...when will it end?

for my thoughts please see Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo Episode of South Park

as for the man being disgruntled for the action the airport took and his lawyers quote. They left the airport two choices neither of which were the one they actually offered.
As said before if they put up jewish decoration, they would then have have to throw up every religions decorations.

the two options therefore they could take would either be to ignore him and get sued for leaving the trees up and not add the menorah, which they would very likely lose. If not more than just the court costs.

or to do as they did and choose to not show any devotion to any religion and make the normally monotonous airport look all that more dull and monotonous.

way to go whiny discontented people. the extreme tolerance movement in this country is far from tolerant.

The fact is that this country was founded by people who had a strong belief in christianity.

Yet the majority of our founding fathers - the ones who actually created our country were not Christians at all. They were mostly deists but respected those of other faith and their right to worship it.

Both are VERY good points! ;-) It always brings me to the paradox of what we (as tolerant folks) think of those that are intolerant. Are we intolerant of intolerance? My head is already starting to hurt, but damn ... wouldn't it be nice if we could just see a "christmas" tree (which is about as symbolic of Christianity as a buffalo) and think happy thoughts?
