Was the M Edition a precurser to Mazdaspeed?

I haven't given it much thought until I saw an M Edition Mx6 over the weekend and I began to think about it. You don't see any new models that are M Editions, just Mazdaspeed. I know Miata has an M Edition, but from what I recall they stopped that once the Mazdaspeed Mx5's came out.

Does anyone have any info. on this?

The M edition is just a luxury version of a car. Some called it the "Mystic" version or something.

It has nothing to do with Mazdaspeed sorry.

in the miatas, the M edition was just a top of the line model with all the options, special badging, different wheels, different color, btu no additional performance options than were available on the regular versions. . .

sorta like an SP23

The question now is, how many different versions/editions are there for our Mazda3?

Well, in the US, we've got the I, S, and SP. Then you've gotta consider Canada, any in Europe, and possibly some in South America.
