Judge rules paper money unfair to blind
Judge says Treasury Department is violating the law by keeping all money the same size and feel.
November 28 2006: 6:10 PM EST

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- A federal judge has ruled that the U.S. Treasury Department is violating the law by failing to design and issue currency that is readily distinguishable to blind and visually impaired people.

Judge James Robertson, in a ruling on a suit by the American Council of the Blind, ordered the Treasury to devise a method to tell bills apart.

The judge wrote that the current configuration of paper money violates the Rehabilitation Act's guarantee of "meaningful access."

"It can no longer be successfully argued that a blind person has 'meaningful access' to currency if she cannot accurately identify paper money without assistance," Robertson wrote in his ruling.

He further ruled that finding a solution to the problem would not be an "undue burden" on the government and ordered the Treasury Department to begin working on a solution within 30 days.

The American Council for the Blind has submitted several alternatives, including embossing, holes punched in the paper or using different-sized bills for different denominations.

The Treasury Department had no comment on the ruling.
Ok so we stamp brail on the bills so after about 100 hands the bumps are smooth now and we wasted the money to put them there so the blind can feel if they are spending a 1$ bill or a 100$ bill... wait they suggested punching holes in it... ok so lets see punch a hole in a 1$ bill in your wallet take the dollar to a movie theater and pass it around a few thousand times during a regular movie, lets see if the bill will last long... I THINK NOT!

No offense if your blind get a credit card and use that instead of cash ... dont have credit?* They make banks with check cards... GO GET ONE!

---------

Reason for posting.... whats next?* Not to be racist but it will sound like I am so here goes - The next thing will be the NAACP and Al Sharpton demanding the color of the bill be changed because its offensive to their culture... Oh wait no no America is being taken over by Mexicans so now on the bills we will have 2 languages English/Spanish so we are Equal for everyone.* Ever go to an ATM and get money out ?* Does it ask you to choose a language ?* Wilmington Trust is my bank and they just started asking this, lots of people complained we are in AMERICA dont ask me to choose to read english so now when you enter your pin you click the top button for english and the bottom for spanish, which is a little better then entering your pin hitting go then another screen comes up for the language selection.

American money is GREEN / RED / BLUE and its written in English and I think a lil pig latin phrase is on it somewhere...?* The bills have never been Embossed / Bumpy / Holy / or freckled with bumps to accomidate the blind why the hell start now?

Anti Religious groups already dont want prayer in schools and do not want the Pledge of Alligence to say " Under God " in it...* I wonder when they will say take the words " In god we trust " off the money...???????* or have they already and I missed it?

Im not Anit Religious and Im not Pro Reglion either Im NEUTRAL so later on down the road I might post something that totally contradicts everything I just said which is why I am me and you are you so.... in the words of Flameboy from Fantasic 4 ---- FLAME ON!

While I, too, like all my money being the same size, shape, and color, I think changing it to make it more usable for folks that need a little assistance is valid - and totally separate from your arguments about making it different colors for Rev. Sharpton, the NAACP, etc. Changing money (you know, PUBLIC tender) because people don't like the design is crap, IMO. Changing it to allow an entirely cut-off segment of the population better use of it is a great thing.

Quite a few years ago, before the Americans with Disabilities Act, store owners, many public offices, and even municipalities were pissed because they had to make their buildings and sidewalks accessible to people in wheel chairs. A certain number of public buses had to be installed with wheelchair lifts. This cost a lot of money, but the argument "oh those crips should just stay home, or not use the sidewalks" didn't really resonate. Notice you'll rarely see a spherical doorknob in a public building - that's because it's a bitch for people with arthritis to grab. I have a hard time with them myself - the lever door handles are a great thing.

Changing the money to accommodate the blind is a good thing I think. Part of how society should be judged is in how it treats its least-well off citizens.

Canada has the French, so we know your plight. Personally I hate dvd covers with dual language titles, because the French fucks it up!

But different sized bills? That will just be a pain in the ass. They could just make it plastic like Australia's currency.

I really couldn't care less about what it looks like. I'm more concerned with how much it's worth and how well it spends.

I know thee president of the national federation of the blind. I think this is a wonderful idea. He folds his bills all sorts of ways just so he know what he is pulling from his wallet. Its to help people who cannot see. And its not a 'racial' thing. I see the type of things the visually impaired do to figure out what bill they are pulling. A lot of people take advantage of the fact that they don't know what kind of bill they are pulling, and thats just unfortunate.

I like how England has their paper money set up. They are different sizes and colours, making it much easier to know what you have.
