Ideas for photographing and selling diamond ring?

I've been holding onto my ex's engagement ring for about a year, but I'd like to try to get some of my money back. Local jewelry shops here won't give crap for it, so I think I'm going to try eBay/craigslist... Has anyone had any luck (or know anyone who has) with selling rings on either or those, or know anywhere else to sell?

I tried taking some photos, but it's a little more difficult than I thought. Some are bringing out flaws that aren't visible to the naked eye, others are really blurry. I've found using a black background, no flash, lowest iso, and big aperature to be the best so far, but I still don't think any of these are quite good enough to catch someone's eye and make them shell out the cash I would like

Here's what I've got so far:

Any advice?

First get yourself a tripod. You are moving slightly when you push the button to take the picture using a tripod will eliminate this and your pictures will be clear. Give it a try. Also try using the zoom from further away rather than trying to get up close..... Good Luck

You got the right idea. What I would do, would be to set the camera on a timer. That way when you press the button, you give the camera time to stabilize so its not moving as you release it. Also, get a couple of lights to shine on it from different directions, so you light up the whole thing and not just one side. You'll get strange shadows otherwise. Low ISO, highest res, no flash, big aperature, and don't get too close to it. Take about 20 shots and pick your best, then crop to get close, not zoom with your camera. This should give you a pretty clear shot of it.

I took a pic of my chrome signal rings earlier using the same technique, all but the tripod, which will make it a lot better.

If you can't get it to work, mail your ring to me and I'll take a pic of it for you

Aha, makes sense, doh! I had it on a tripod but I was shaking it when pressing the button

Re: Ideas for photographing and selling diamond ring?

i'd set the ring on a white sheet of paper and use the macro setting on the camera, as well as use a tripod...though a tripod isn't necessary. the camera just needs to be still. better lighting, too.
