Rumsfeld finally resigns...

Dems take over the house, most probably the senate, and rumsfeld resigns. Pretty meaningless at this point but I guess the Republicans are trying to cover their butts for 08'.

Congress can't "vote out" any member of the executive branch, except through impeachment which would require him to have comitted an actual crime as opposed to him simply being an incompetent jerkass.

I'm pissed about this. Rumsfeld tried to resign once before, and Bush wouldn't let him. Everyone knew that the guy was screwing up badly. Bob Woodward's latest book shows him to be a tremendously divisive figure in the administration, and the reason why we have just continued to plod along in Iraq rather than change and adapt our overall strategy.

I disagreed with the way he was running the war, but I was able to at least admire the consistency. They followed the strategy that they thought was best, and weren't swayed by political considerations at home. How easy would it have been to score major points in this election if they had made major changes in the strategy. Not bringing the boys home, but just doing something different to show that they're flexible and looking for a way to win. No, they kept on with the current plan despite the criticism. And if it cost us the house or senate, so be it. I felt it was better to stick with what you thought was right rather than bend and sway to suit public opinion.

So what happens? We lose the mid-terms and now Rummy wants to leave and Bush wants to let him. What kind of bullshit is this? If you were going to bow to political pressure, you should have done it BEFORE we lost the damn congress over this. You should have done it BEFORE just about every dem campaign ran on the basic message of "I don't have an answer, but my opponent was once in a picture with Bush".

I thought our strategy wasn't the best, but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt because they thought it was right and that's why I vote republican: because they do what they think is right as opposed to what yesterdays opinion poll tells them is right. I was irked that we weren't adjusting the strategy too much, but at least they weren't trying to win elections with people's lives. But after all this, to make it about politics NOW, when you could have done it 6 months ago and possibly saved us control of the congress........this is bullshit.

Wow, I actually agree with you on a political matter. The whole thing is a total knee-jerk reaction.

some things are just too obviously insane to be covered up with partisan spin.

What difference is it gonna make? Is Gates going to enact policies that will see Iraq get all better in 2 years? Not really. Is he going to somehow safeguard American lives in Iraq? Not really. Is he going to bring back American soldiers? Not really. Like murph said, the appropriate time to get rid of Rumsfeld was when he wanted to leave himself and Bush held him back. Dumping him now isn't going to make diddly of a difference to anything and is a pretty silly attempt to gain back some republican votes for 08'.

Re: Rumsfeld finally resigns...

Well, if anything, we don't have to listen to his pompous ass rant about well...anything. I agree about trying to re-energize the Republican report, and it's most likely why it was put off until the day after elections.
