Which saved my life? Civic Si or Physics?

I almost died today.....really. I didnt, but im having a hard time figuring out why not & why there was almost zero damage.
Driving home from work, i took a left in the far left lane of a 3 lane road. After turning left, i signaled & started getting in the middle lane. I dropped it into third and this honda crv decides he's going to come into the middle lane as well, see's me at the last second & pulls back. I had already started braking hard, so there was now a gap & he decides to swing over again. I dont brake this time, and force him to stay in the lane. (Merely by not braking again, nothing rude or stupid).
So, i move over to the right lane & he comes up blaring his horn & flashing his lights, and of course flipping be off. I return the favor with a jerk off motion, but stay put in the right lane. The crv ends up way ahead of me.
About 2 minutes later the far left lane opens up all the way down, so i signal & cross over, dropping the hammer in the process. (my mistake). The crv is in the middle lane and as i am passing him,(not before, i mean i am next to the guy) he swerves over into my lane. If i hadnt moved he would have sideswiped me. Knee jerk reaction was to pull left and brake. Didnt work out so well. Drive by wire plus snow tires = me overcompensating big time. I managed to get away from the left curb, but lost traction and slid towards the right curb, overcut & slid back left with too little distance to the median to gain control. I met the median with my front tires first, car was almost parallel, tires were pointing right. (median is 6-8 feet wide concrete with dirt filler), slid past a relflector by millimeters, rear tires came up on the median, i was still side ways at this point, so it was just tire that hit the concrete coming over. I was fast approaching a light pole which i was quite sure would end my Si (& possibly driving) days for good.
Somehow enough traction or gravity or God came into play, & i was suddenly off the median, on the opposite side of the road, facing the wrong way.
By the time the dust settled (literally), the crv was gone & i was facing alot of pissed off cars. Amazingly i couldnt find anything wrong with the car.
So i moved it & parked at a church which happened to be at the intersection where this happened, called the police & inspected for damage.
here is what i found:
Curb rash on the back left rim
Small rocks in between front rim lips & tires.
Bent the pass towhook up 1/4 inch.
Very slight misalignment.
A butt ton of dirt inside the car (windows down, sunroof open)
Denver police are useless w/o video footage.

Thats it. If you were to look at the car now, you would never know what happened. I should have flipped, i should have broke a rim & ruined the suspension, i should have been nailed by the oncoming truck, i really should have hit the reflector & the light pole. She's going to honda tomorrow just to be safe, but there is no contact patches underneath. I didnt even scrape the bottom of the friggin bumper!!!
Any brainiacs out there know the odds off taking a curb, shooting in between two poles & into incoming traffic without taking damage? I believe i beat all odds there.
Im going back out tomorrow to take pics, the idiot who tried to kill me left the base at the same time, i know what he drives & what he looks like. I will find him and we will have a talk. But its too dark now for photo's. I will post em up if anyone is interested.
But man, the Si can take a beating!!!!

Oh yeah? Well im gonna stick a twin turbo wankel rotary in the trunk and spank all yall!

i hit a median once before in my last car. and the front axle snapped in half. the front left part of the frame of the car was smashed and the control arm and couple other odds and ends where misplaced and bent. cost me 1400 dollars and a welded on frame from an identical car.

Re: Which saved my life? Civic Si or Physics?

I know we (Ford) have a test that is run on every single vehicle we sell...It's called the curb test. The vehicle is run straight into a curb at, I believe, 45 mph and must survive.

I think physics also played a part. it sounds like you weren't really braking, so there wasn't a weight tranfer to the front wheels (do the same test above and hit the brakes just before and you rip everything out...) If I'm going to hit a pothole I just hit it know instead of trying to slow down because of this fact....

Glad everything worked out. I've been "almost killed" so many times on the roads here in Detroit it's not even funny.

I've also seen some crazy accidents....one guy decided he REALLY needed to get off at an exit, problem was he was 3 lanes over with an 18 wheeler between him and the exit. He yanks the car over (late 90's Cavalier), I see him cross in front of the semi, then appear on the RHS of the semi at about a 45 degree angle AWAY from the ramp sliding out of control, he corrects, then starts to slide back in front of the semi, I mean RIGHT in front. He crosses back across the freeway and down into the ditch completely sideways and slides to a stop. This was all at ~80-85 mph. I guarantee he needed new underwear.

Now go get yourself a 3.

This is exactly why im a firm believer in the "defensive driving" technique when im around other cars.

Good thing that your car isnt damaged more, just remember next time, if a driver looks pissed at you, stay the hell away from him.

Good to hear you're safe. And when you see that guy again, be sure to have a LONG talk with him. I don't know if the guy had the intent of killing you or not, but being irritated does NOT entitle him to drive like an asshole. And if he gives you shit...well. just know that you have a better state of mind than him

I dont know wtf he thought he was doing, but he wasnt trying to cut me off, it was more like a "flinch test" & i failed miserably, but he sure ran like a little bitch!!! In a court of law its his word against mine, which wont go very far on word of mouth, but behind closed doors talking to his boss, thats a different story. I have a solid reputation there, & at the very least i figure i can make him take anger management.
If i play nice.......
