Give me strength.....unreal!!!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061018/...ground_tag_ban

ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Tag, you're out! Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous.

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Spokane, Wash., also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, S.C., school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."

Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.

So soccer, and basketball are out too? You "chase" after the ball. And other people.

Well, America is about to get fatter.

I loved playing tag (candle tag, tunnel tag, freeze tag), ga-ga, and getting my energy out during break times in elem. school. Kids need to be able to release all that energy.

So kids get hurt, big whoop. We all fell down and got scrapes and bruises. So long as no one is killed, let them have fun.

Re: Give me strength.....unreal!!!

hot damn. when i was a kid they simply released us into the woods, the playground equipment with a 20 foot drop, the snowbanks for "king of the mountain" and they gave us all the balls we needed to perfect our highly modified versions of sports that always involved pain of some sort.

we're breeding a nation of fat-ass helmet wearing nerds.

wow...imagine how 'unpolitically' correct playing cowboys and indians would be now?

News like this is a disgrace, it really shows how some people are so far out off touch, it is impossible to make them see reality.

What's the use of happiness? It can't buy you money.

Re: Give me strength.....unreal!!!

I imagine that if there weren't parents who would sue the school district every time their kid came home with a bruise (physical or emotional), then these kinds of policies wouldn't be enacted (as often).

Although I disagree with it, at least I can see the point to banning dodgeball in gym class. But tag at recess?

What's wrong with dodgeball? It's great for eye-hand coordination, agility and reflexes!

Dude, Superjudge I can't help but stare at your avatar. It is fricken annoying!

Yeah I think that is sad that the school banned that. What next? No kick ball, I mean this really large rubber balls could maybe hurt someone if they are unlucky. I say ban games and sports that are very likely to injure kids (no smear the qu$(* games, no competition Tai Kwon Do or Kick Boxing, no dodge ball with medicine balls). Other then that, let the damn kids play their games. Seriously, they need them and sometimes it helps kids to get hurt once in awhile. I don't suggest that it should happen on purpose, but I really don't think you can successfully develop into an adult if you never ever have a chance to skin your knee, or get bruised, or get a cut, etc.
