No more carputer

So I get up this morning to head to work and my alarm system key fob thing tells me that my car is unlocked. Sometimes I forget to lock it so that wasn't totally out of the norm, but when I opened my door I saw my glovebox sitting open with all the laptop's wires hanging out. Sometime between midnight and 7:50 this morning somebody walked by my car (which was parked in my driveway 100ft from the road) and decided to see if it was unlocked, then proceeded to go through everything in the car. I don't know why they took it, they left the power adapter and everything, so it's not going to do them much good, but they left all of the money I had in the center console, my touchscreen and the sub in the back. The sherriff said I was basically screwed and it looks like insurance won't cover it since the car wasn't locked, and my rates would go up again since I had a window smashed out at school a few months ago. I guess I'm going to have to replace it out of pocket, which being a student means it won't happen for a long time. Sorry if the post made no sense, I'm kinda upset at the moment.

Re: No more carputer

why would you tell them that the car was unlocked? are u sure that they are? or was that coming from the officer? i have heard from somewhere that some keyless entries share the same code with other mazda3's(weird).

anyhoo.. lying could save you some insurance costs... but then again i wouldnt do it coz its bad

Common sense would tell the investigator... well the windows are up and the locks aren't popped... it must have been unlocked. These cars have a cable locking system... not a rod that can be easily slim-jim'd. When he goes and files a fradulent police report to get a new carputer... he is breaking numerous laws. The only thing I could tell you is if you have homeowners/renters insurance... maybe you can see if they will cover it(?).

I feel for you, I had one of my other cars broken into right out side my apartment window a few years back. Still freaks me out when the dog starts barking at the front door late at night. That's what the .45 is for though right?

Re: No more carputer

Haha I feel you on the .45, I live in the county so I could probably get away with using it. Were going to install motion trigger lights along both driveways and I'm going to set my alarm to auto-arm if I forget to lock it. I probably won't bother with the insurance since the deductable is almost what the laptop cost me. Oh well, sometimes you gotta learn the hard way.

Re: No more carputer

My 3 was broken into last night. I had thought I locked the doors (I usually do), but who knows, they may have hacked into it with the proper keyless entry code. Anybody know much about this or had it happen to them? What can I do to prevent this from happening?

The weird thing is my car was parked in my driveway when it happened. All they stole were my sunglasses. No sign of damage whatsoever.

Cheers.
